This story in the DP quotes Laycock as saying we didn't lose anybody who had committed. So I'm thinking PWO.
It, also, states we could add another member to the class...hmmmm??

Interesting that the DP article was revised and the statement about adding another member to the class was removed. The opening sentence states 15 signed on Wednesday, in addition to Mitchell. Maybe Cory Ryder signed his NLI, but because of the late commit, paper work for admission is still pending processing.

As referred to in the other thread, front page article in the Feb. 2nd Nantucket Inquirer on Cory and his dad does state he got a full scholarship, but it, also, states "when he signs a letter of intent."

I hadn't thought about that. He committed on the 24th, less than a week before NSD. A LOI probably isn't official unless the athlete applies and is accepted into the University. Makes sense.

We may see a FBS transfer after spring ball. Top HS recruits probably expect to start and may not take 4th on the depth chart very well.

I'd love to get another DL or LB in here.

One Tribe. One Family.

Any intel on this or just a hunch? I'm curious what position Laycock would be looking to fill.

Apparently on the LOI, ther is a AM or PM time that the parents have to circle. So maybe that was why cory's LOI rook so long.

Telling comment was Jimmye's remark that they got a lot of players good enough to play as freshmen.

well... I hope we do not give lots of minutes to true freshmen. I don't think that is going to be very successful.

I think we're seeing a significant step up in talent this year which has been occurring regularly over the last few years. Having true freshmen play is fine with me if they are better than the other kids at the same position. I don't care if they graduate in four years or in five with a redshirt.

I want the best players on the field. If a TF usurps a 5th yr senior's slot, so be it.

Agree with best players on the field... just usually not great if your best players are 18 instead of 20-22.

But, we know we haven't been as competitive as we would like in the last few years, so maybe this is the start of a step up in recruiting.

I'd rather have the players on the field that are most likely to lead to a win. Those aren't neccessarily the best players or the most experienced players, but those who fit together best and give the highest level of play.

RE: 2017 National Signing Day Thread
I am totally in agreement with putting the best players on the field, whether they are 18 or 22, scholarship or walk on. There is a lot that goes into labeling a guy the best. Ideally you want your best athletes to be the best players, that is not always the case. You could have a guy that passes all of the eye tests, everyone drools over him because he looks amazing. What we don't see is he can't remember the playbook or his route is supposed to snap off at 12 yards, come back to 9. The QB throws it to 9, the guy settles at 12, defender steps in and picks it off. That's why this stud out of high school is on the bench and not on the field.

Many of these high school stars did not need to be precise in their assignments. They were better athletes and they could cheat. If their coach was more concerned with the result and not the technique the player was never coached up. Then he gets to campus and finds out he can't just run up and down the field. Technique many times has to be taught before that eye test stud becomes the best.

Ideally we have developed our upperclassmen so we can give that 18 year old body another year to develop and technique to be taught. If we didn't and the team will benefit from the young guy playing, then it's on the job training. The group last year stepped up and in pretty well. Let's see what happens with this new group.
