Proposed super conference
The Metro Conference also had studies into a new "Super conference" in 1990. The study was conducted by Raycom Sports. The conference would have included members of the Metro, Atlantic 10, and Big East conferences, but it was not clear if the conference would become a football-sponsoring conference as many of its members did in fact sponsor football but were either independents or belonged to other conferences. The original study plan also included Penn State.[1]

Rutgers Memphis State

I would've been happy with that.

RE: Your ideal conference
Every AAC fan wants to be in a conference with all P5 schools.
Every MAC fan wants to be in a leaner version of the MAC which includes Cincinnati.
ACC fans wants to merge in with the SEC East schools.
Do I have it right?

I've mentioned this here before: The old Big East essentially stole Raycom's plan. The original Big East football group (announced in February 1991) is this plan's "North Division" with Miami instead of Cincinnati.

The Old WAC:
Arizona
Arizona State
BYU
Colorado State
New Mexico
Utah
UTEP
Wyoming
The old WAC. It just made too much sense for all those regional mountain schools to keep playing each other in every sport all year long.
Cheers!

Seems like a good summary.
Right now my ideal conference for UMass would be a G5 conference with the ACC's footprint.
UMass
UConn
Temple
Cinci
Navy/VCU
Army
ODU
Western Kentucky
East Carolina
Georgia State or Southern
UCF
USF

The ideal was actually the way it was until about 2 or 3 decades ago:
From coast to coast we had:
The Major Indys (original Big East football & original CUSA lineup)-Orange usually
ACC-South Atlantic Coast schools-Peach Bowl
SEC-Southern schools-Sugar Bowl
Big 10-Midwestern schools-Rose Bowl
Big 8-Plains schools-Orange Bowl
SWC-Texas schools-Cotton Bowl
WAC-Mountain schools-Fiesta Bowl
PAC 8-Pacific schools-Rose Bowl
There was also the categories for the rest not included in the above:
MAC-Midwestern schools not in the Big 10-California/Las Vegas Bowl
Big West-Pacific schools not in the PAC-California/Las Vegas Bowl
Cheers!

That exists in the form of the MPSF for different sports.

How about a little symmetry here? Fla division, one private; Tx division lots of religion.

Trolling for negative feedback.
Duke and Vandy as the SEC privates, come on, overrated and not nearly as egalitarian as RICE!
Alternative (remember this is my "ideal" conference) Dump Duke or Vandy (overrated privates) and add Rice, adjust divisions as necessary. I'm not going to do any real work since this is an alternate world that will never see the light of day. Spent entirely too much time here, out!
