Love how much our 2nd team stepped up. Rowley, Knight, Pierce, Tot, and Burchfield all had big plays at one point or another that helped us win the game

RE: JMU
Most of the FT woes were Whitman. JMU clearly was more comfortable fouling him than letting anything happen near the basket for us. That also led to our struggle getting into a flow on offense. With all the whistles, each possession was a completely separate entity.

Tot played a strong game. The second team definitely played strong defense and Rowley provided just enough offense to keep us in it. I thought Omar played well in the second half. He tried a longball or two, but wasn't forcing much. The refs started swallowing the whistle right before he drove twice for bad no calls. I hope that we can give Daniel some extra rest in the next month or so. I want the Dixon we had to start 2017, not a lesser version. Wins matter, but he needs to be healthy. I liked the 6'6"+ defensive lineup for the last 7 seconds, but I would have liked it more if anyone made the ball handler change direction.

I will never know how that ref thought the last shot counted.

RE: JMU
Quite a strange year thus far. 3 conference wins by a total of 4 points, all literally decided at the buzzer. 3 conference losses by a total of 54 points, only one competitive into the second half.

This is a team struggling to find its confidence and its game. It has shown enough to give one hope for a magical weekend but been so lacking at times that we may have our first one-and-done in the Prewitt-Dixon "era".

Imagine how we would be feeling now if Dixon had missed his three, Elon had made theirs and JMU had beat the clock.

RE: JMU
Shaver in post game said "we have a lot of good players not doing what they are suppose to do". This IMO includes not only running the offense but breaking a press. Our turnovers are outrageous for a veteran team. Even worse the starters showed no emotion either on the floor or on the bench. Rowley enthusiasm was contagious and the second team played W&M ball.

Burchfield is has good hustle but does not have the athleticism to match up in the two spot with most team starters for long durations. Tot finally got his break and made good on it but past experience shows the Shaver will revert back to his normal starter Cohn and Tot will ride the bench sadly.

Dixon is doing a good job of mentoring Knight on the bench and this will be invaluable for the future as Knight really cares but is getting frustrated right now with his fouls. Dixon showed no signs of back issues and continues to shoot well and Prewitt is Prewitt...

This team is unable to put together 40 minutes of solid BB and against a better opponent would have lost again tonight. If these young men can get serious and play Tribe play for 40 minutes we would be dangerous.

In my opinion Shaver should go to the old platoon system that UNC used years ago for the next couple of games! This way the players will hold their teammates accountable as the whole squad gets taken out when that squad is not following the game plan!

Not sure I would call it that.... They let JMU go coast to coast in about 5 seconds, fouled the **** out of the 1st shot, and luckily the 2nd shot happened after the whistle

Beggars can't be choosers.

RE: JMU
A win is a win and, despite the 18 turnovers we won a tough, nasty game.

Some comments:

*Omar played extremely well in the second half: 10 of his twelve points including the tying basket on a rugged rebound and athletic putback in the last minute in the second half, six rebounds, a blocked shot and a big steal. He also defended extremely well all night and did not force his shots, other than one ill-advised one against three drive. Made 4 of 5 foul shots too.

*Malinowski is in a funk...he appears, at times, lost out there

*What's with the severe criticism (mostly by one poster) of Cohn. He had a poor night last night
but still had three assists and, remarkably in a game with 18 Tribe turnovers, zero miscues. When he was pulled from the game along with the entire starting five, he spent much of the time going down the bench and exhorting his teammates and cheering the guys on the floor. He wears his heart on his sleeve and let's not forget the very good games he's had recently.

*Rowley showed a very quick shot last night and played some hard defense. Will he start over Malinowski Saturday evening?

*Whitman's abysmal foul shooting cost us an easier win, but he played very hard and was the victim of some bad foul calls---as was Nathan--on him. JMU, let's note, also missed lots of fouls, most in the second half.

*Official attendance announced at 3076. There was outstanding student attendance and the crowd looked closer to 4000 than 3000. Do they count the students? Loud support from the crowd for our guys in the closing minutes.

My two favorite moments (both courtesy of the Zaxby's player of the game):

1. Rowley crashes into the tables at the baseline (on a great play to save possession). He gets up, gives his trademark smile, and apologizes to everyone sitting down there. He even tried to straighten the tables.

2. When Rowley got his 4th foul and went to the bench, he went down the entire line quietly saying, "f*!k, f*!k, f*!k, f*!k, f*!k"...all the while giving that wry smile.

I had never sat at the Litten Lair before last night. What a treat! And, yes, Mrs. Ribe, those were golden moments. I've never seen anybody enjoy a game more than Paul did last night. And thanks for following @tribeaday on Instagram!

I was really impressed with the crowd on hand last night. Kaplan looked electric on TV and it seemed like an awesome experience for everyone on hand. Perhaps we're becoming a basketball school? I'm hoping this win drums up more interest from students and we see even more people on hand in future home games.

RE: JMU
Exciting, if not the prettiest game of the year. Even included a few minutes of "Bonus Tension" after the horn. I thought sure Dalembert had been fouled on the second shot and was trying to figure the odds of him hitting both (he had missed at least one of every two at that point) and possible overtime. Thank goodness for the no call.

Coach Rowe has JMU playing strong, solid defense. His squad is undermanned on offense, but if he finds some more scoring ( I was impressed by Shakir Brown, off the bench), they will be a tough team to handle.

It was a needed wake up call for our starters, as it certainly appeared they had their own game plan (first available open...or NOT so open...shot) in the first half. The second team moved the ball the way this offense is supposed to, making the extra pass that finds the open shot, and it showed. They also played energized defense and got needed stops.

Needless to say (But when has that ever stopped me...), there were some "interesting" calls from the ref crew. Generally, Thursday games are great because the level of ref experience is higher and the games are called cleaner. However, when the CAA Referee Coordinator (my man Bryan) is at courtside, you get to see some calls that probably wouldn't have been made otherwise.

Both teams shot poorly from the line, which is still concerning. It WILL cost us if it isn't improved. Still, saw some encouraging things. Its pretty obvious that the CAA this season is UNCW, then CofC, then everybody else, so keep improving, try to stay in the top half and make your run in Charleston.

Bring on Elon.

What is going on with 1st team guys when you say they had their own game plan? Are they not listening to the coaching staff? If this is true, then we are lacking some serious leadership issue.

Great to see the team find a way to win, regardless of who was playing. I think we're all very interested to see who starts tomorrow...

I am critical of him because he should be playing way better than he is playing. He should be one of the top 3 point guards in the CAA, yet he is not playing like it. Not having any miscues (which he did, just the scorers table was harsh and gave Dixon the turnover) doesn't equal success. If you watched him yesterday, he literally provided nothing on offense. At no point in the game did he attempt to drive to the hoop and create offense for his teammates.

If Cohn isn't willing to create offense for the team and just makes passes around the perimeter that anybody can do, then I would rather see a much better defender on the court in Tot. Sure, Tot is pretty much useless on offense, but if Cohn does what he did yesterday again, I hope Shaver does the same thing and give Tot his minutes.

I hope being benched sparks a fire in him and we see the Cohn that showed up against Hofstra and was the main reason we won the game. If not and he continues to be nonchalant on offense, then W&M will probably have no chance of making a run in the CAA tourney.

RE: JMU
I just watched the last 3 minutes or so of the game.

Snowden sneaked in and had a wide open shot at the end. That was a nice play drawn up by them. Looks like he lost the ball on the way up so his shot was off. Using my keen lip-reading skills: after the game (while the play was under review), JMU's assistant asked Snowden, "How did you miss that?"

Whitman's 5th foul was nonexistent. No idea what they saw on that one.

Kent's foul on Daniel on the last possession was minimal. He maybe got his skinny knee in the way of Daniel's drive.

Nathan Knight trucked him. That's how he missed it. It was the right move, you want them to earn it from the line instead of having an uncontested layup but watching the replay I have no idea how that wasn't called.

Looks like the foul was after he lost control of the ball. Still a foul, but probably not going to get called in that situation.

I agree that the foul wasn't called because it occurred after the ball left the hand. By the same token I don't think Dixon would have been awarded foul shots if the trip had occurred after his shot instead of before.

RE: JMU
Kent definitely stuck his knee out intentionally and caused Dixon to go down. That's a foul every time. Snowden was trucked, but it didn't effect his shot attempt, which is why the contact wasn't called. I'd probably have a beef with the non-call if I was a JMU fan (shudder), but we all know refs will avoid deciding a game WITH a call at the end if they can at all help it. I thought Snowden's attempt was partially blocked, but upon further review I think it did slip out of his hand on the way up.

In general the game was called horribly. Way to many fouls called. I really felt for Whitman and Knight, who each had multiple ticky-tack to non-existent fouls called against them. At least the refs generally called it tight both ways.

Happy for the win. There's a lot of talent on this team, but they don't do enough of the little things well and there's little to no intensity about them. Holding out hope that they'll continue to improve. I like that Shaver pulled all the starters early into second half; they came out flat and didn't run the offense. If I'm Shaver, I forget the whole concept of regular starters for the next couple games. Best practice players leading up to the game, start. Players that hustle, play defense, and run the offense stay on the floor, those that don't get pulled. I think Shaver will use the depth to his advantage to light some fires going forward.
