UNCW basketball / Keatts' Press Conferences
Have been impressed enough with the UNCW program & their coach, Kevin Keatts, that I took time to watch Keatts' post-game press conferences, both after the UNCW-W&M game Thursday and also after UNCW's win over Hofstra Saturday.

A few interesting nuggets:

- Keatts mentioned after the Hofstra game, that UNCW's goal defensively is to have 40 deflections a game (that is, deflected passes). He implied that they usually reach that goal. It made me think about how few passes W&M deflects on defense (maybe 10 a half? For a total of 20 per game?). Also brings to mind how many passes Tarpey deflected last year, using his length and hustle to disrupt the passing lanes.

- Keatts also spoke about UNCW's level of conditioning (something we all observed that W&M lacked at Wilmington). He said that one of his freshman in particular was just starting to get into "Seahawk shape". This is the level of conditioning their system requires. Keatts said that the last 8 minutes of the second half is where this level of conditioning really pays off for his team. Sure enough, in the W&M-UNCW game, the last 8 minutes of the second half was where they really ran away from the Tribe.

RE: UNCW basketball / Keatts' Press Conferences
I have sat through a few Keatts practices.

He usually creates three "teams" and runs them against each other, each looking for the best record in a best of tournament. They aren't playing for a score of say 5 at one time, they are playing only THAT score. First to score wins, the other team goes to the sideline. The team not on the court is doing pushups or suicides on the sideline waiting to play. Whoever gets maybe five baskets total wins. When a team gives up a basket, they have to sprint off the floor and the other team inbounds and tries to get a quick score off the break.

Also, he will stop a game in progress if a player makes a mistake and give a quick correction then play restarts. There are no long admonitions or explanations, so the players don't get a rest during these corrections. And, Keatts or any coach can step in and make the correction. If a player makes a serious mistake, he makes the correction and replaces them, when they come off the court they run suicides.

You never see a bunch of players standing around watching coaches talk. When they take breaks, the coaches are talking to each other about what they saw on the court.

If you see this, you see why he says our players are the best conditioned in America.

I get that UNCW is good and athletic, etc, etc, but you just described my high school practices, and we didn't win our division. This is not a unique practice schedule; Keatts' success comes from recruiting good players and coming up with a good gameplan that puts them in a position to succeed offensively and defensively. He deserves lots of credit for that.

I have watched Tribe practice and would observe our conditioning program plus the player commitments to it may account for some of our team disappointing season.

If true, would think the buck stops with the staff regarding expectations and driving that commitment.

I agree about the buck stopping with the staff, but remember one thing.

The coaches can't be with the team in the off season very much and it is always the responsibility of the team leaders/captains to make sure that off season conditioning programs are followed. That's the point of having folks in town over the summer. Conditioning is done in the off season. When practice starts the assumption is that everyone is in top shape so as not to waste time on running.

So......I'm starting to read between the lines and it all adds up to Shaver's disappointment with key individuals and the team. Let's hope none of this carries over to next season.

They need to find a leader next season. Hopefully Cohn steps up (maybe even Whitman) and pushes the players to be ready. That being said, each player on the team should know by now the only way they are going to improve is through continuous practice and conditioning. It is just a matter of whether the will to succeed is greater than the effort required.
