Its a smart place to go...make a quick impact and, assuming any success, you likely stick around for awhile.

"The Bills have not made the postseason since 1999 under Wade Phillips, a 17-year drought that is the longest active streak in the NFL and is tied for the fifth-longest playoff drought in NFL history."

I would agree. If Sean can succeed in returning Buffalo to the playoffs, somewhere down the road he'll surely get a chance to be HC at a premium franchise.

If he ca't get Buffalo to the playoffs, it won't be a huge mark against him and probably won't be a big mark against him and I'd bet that he'd get another chance at being a HC somewhere down the road.

Not sure that anyone is guaranteed a 2nd head coaching stint, but Sean did a great job with Carolina and also did an excellent job in Philadelphia. The Bills defense was a significant disappointment, but there is talent there. I think Sean is likely to be a good fit there. Given recent coaching hires, he should get at least 2-3 years to see what he can do. One playoff appearance would be a success.

As a Panthers fan, it sucks to see him leave. Hope he does well in Buffalo though. Tough place to do well and is probably the 2nd most cursed team behind the Browns

No one said it was guaranteed. My point was that success in Buffalo would be a great leg up for a better job and that failure probably wouldn't count a lot against him down the road.

Sean has had the job 24 hours and there is a discussion about whether he will get a second head coaching job. Wow. Just wow.

There's talk about there being better jobs out there, but I'd rather see Sean be so successful in Buffalo that he elevates the franchise to an elite level. New England wasn't exactly the poster child for success before Belichick got there, but now it's considered one of the most respected franchises in pro football. Depending how things play out in Seattle over the next 5-10 years, you may be able to say the same for the Seahawks as well. I wish Sean the best of luck!

I'm not sure I'd say that. It's certainly one of the most successful. How they came by that success, though, doesn't exactly garner a lot of respect. Easy to be successful stealing the other team's plays, breaking rules wherever you can, etc. They are the UNC-CHeat of the NFL.

RE: Sean McDermott
Say what you want about them cheating, but to me it is a prime example of owner->organization->coach being in sync and staying with a proven approach year after year. The only other franchise that can say this is Pittsburgh with the exception of Cowher/Tomlin being two coaches.

New England was terrible for many many years (with an exception once in a while) before Bellichick showed up. Look it up

I agree about Pittsburgh.

I don't need to look it up. They were terrible before they cheated, became good once they knew exactly which plays the other team was going to run, and they stuck with the plan of cheating until they were busted. When they did get busted they tried cheating other ways (creating headset problems for opposing teams, etc.). It's led to a lot of success and they haven't had to forfeit their SBs, so it worked out for them. The parallels to UNC-CHeat regarding continual cheating -> success->slap on the wrist punishment are actually very strong.

RE: Sean McDermott
IMO McDermott should do everything he can to emulate the GREATriots. He should model himself after Bill BeliGREAT, find his own Tom GREATy, do everything in his power to turn Buffalo into New GREATland West. Because right now it's the GREATriots' league and everyone else is playing for 2nd.

So I wish him the best of luck in Buffalo. And I hope he turns the franchise around completely (except for when he visits GREATboro come playoff time).

This is a very DEFLATing post.

Thought it more appropriately added to this thread and to stop the multiple tangential posts in other threads.

Sean McDermott coaches the Bills to the playoffs in his first season as Head Coach...ends a 17 year playoff drought, longest in american sports.
