RE: UNCW
I live in Atlanta and before the season I was excited about the prospect of driving only five hours to watch the CAA tournament. I am still thinking about going, but my enthusiasm is waning. I've lived through the darkest years of this program, but it's been a while since I've watched two conference games where I thought that we were completely overmatched. As others have pointed out, that is a positive sign for how far our program has come under Shaver. There are a bunch of reasons why the team has underperformed this year, but right now I don't want to think about the why. I just feel disappointment more than anything else. I will not give up on this team, but, in my opinion, we will need a near miraculous turnaround to compete at the tourney in March. Of course, this is an overstatement, but I feel like the direction of our season hinges on how we respond tomorrow against CoC. Go tribe.

RE: UNCW
We just need to play a better team defense. We just cannot let other team go over 100.
Last night, UNCW showed how to stop us. They pretty much let Whitman have his space in the middle, but they guarded the perimeter really well.

That was what worried me the most. They basically gave us open layups and dared us to beat them playing by 2s.

They showed how to stop us, but it's not to let Whitman have the middle; it's to make us run. For the first 15 minutes we ate them up inside. Nearly all of our shots in that time period were in the paint, and we shot around 85%. Whitman had 10 points before half time I believe. It's when we tried to keep up with them and take advantage of fast breaks. They are a better conditioned team, but their poor defense was exposed in the first 15 minutes of play.

Conditioning has a lot to do with playing 40 minutes of defense. True, we played poorly early on in the halfcourt, and got gashed by your backdoor cuts. But we made some adjustments and also held Dixon to 10 points and 0-2 from three, because we got out and guarded the perimeter.
Part of the reason Cacok struggled against Whitman is that Coach Keatts has reminded him how important it is he stay out of foul trouble. As a sophomore he's still learning how to play good D without making silly fouls that take him off the court. He'll get better in that area over time.

Not sure how poor the defense really is when it creates turnovers leading to over 30 points. Many of us thought Cacok fouled several times and was not called for it. None of that would have made the least difference in the outcome given how one-sided it was. UNCW's starting five is outstanding. It says a lot when Talley can hardly get on the floor. Thankfully, it is January 13th and not March 5th or 6th today. The Tribe has a long way to climb. Before the game, one UNCW poster indicated we would get manhandled inside. That was the only area where we did decently last night. On to Charleston....

Cacok stayed out of foul trouble because the refs didn't make calls, not because he wasn't fouling. Credit the home court and momentum for that one. There were a few no calls that could have stopped the UNCW end of half run and he was involved in most of them.
The lack of fouling on both sides also contributed to our running out of gas. We were not able to substitute with our normal patterns, and had players playing significantly more minutes in a high tempo game in the first half. One of our strengths is our depth, and we weren't able to use it in a game with few stops. If there were 4-5 more combined fouls called in the first half, even bad calls that went against us, our energy level probably would have been better. Adapting to game situations is not one of Coach Shaver's strengths, so adjusting second half minutes to get players back to normal rest probably wasn't going to happen. You can argue that all guys should be conditioned to play 40 minutes, but you can't focus on everything all the time, and this is the first time conditioning has been a problem for us, and that's in an game flow outlier.
I also think that while Omar is struggling, his shot volume feels like it's lower and he's not forcing shots he shouldn't be taking. He's taking shots in the flow of the offense that we expect him to make and just not making them. Dixon did the same thing earlier in the season. Omar is also still the king of getting hit on drives without getting to the line, last night especially.

RE: UNCW
I wish our AD was as upset about losing as I am. Maybe then, he'd start allocating some real cash for the program.
I can take a loss (I've been a Tribe fan long enough to know how to deal with it) but I'm tired of watching our boys swim toward the horizon. Every other CAA program has gone dancing and, I believe, we haven't because of a lack of institutional support. That should make all of us just a little pissed off.

If I can be guaranteed that the "floor" for Tribe hoops is a .500 conference record, I would sign up for that today.
I agree with those who think that this is an "off" year, and I will take a .500 season.
And pounding my drum, I want this team in a non NCAA/ NIT post-season tournament if they are invited. That shows commitment to the program, and anyone who thinks differently is wrong. :-)

More than a little. We're not asking for Duke or UNC level resources and support here. We'd be very happy with the median that our conference peers receive.

Conference peers ...
Can't be Hofstra, Northeastern, Drexel, UNCW, CofC.
Now you're left with JMU, Towson, UD, Elon. How do we stack up against those four?

Well, the good news is we go from one of the fastest paced teams in the country in UNCW to one of the slowest in C of C. Shouldn't be gassed tomorrow...
Cohn needs to stop disappearing from big games. When he isn't helping to create offense, we usually lose

Maybe with a slower pace we can find the willingness to defend the rim? This game will be won on defense; ours or theirs. It's a paint game!
We're a five pt dog. No big thing.
