Considering that had we squeezed into a bowl with 6 wins, we likely would have had to deal with keeping the same OC's, offense and entire staff for next year.... I'll take sitting out this year to get back to OUR option. At least we got something for our pain. We probably would have lost the bowl game anyway.

This, I think not making a bowl was the tipping point in firing the OC's so I am good missing one bowl. Who know how next year goes but it was obvious the offense was not going to be better with those guys. The D stunk as well so might be a case of taking a step back next year to take huge leap forward in two years.

I would like to think that a bowl isn't the end game for what the Southern administration determines as a successful season. 6-6 with a bowl appearance wouldn't fly at App and I know it isn't acceptable in Statesboro. I expect those coaches would've been relieved of their duties regardless as the offensive output and lack of cohesion were clear for all to see.

That said, I believe Summers is going to be a solid coach and many G5 schools aren't able to get coaches with grass roots ties. I believe that his willingness to move on from those coaches and hopefully toward a more traditional Southern style of play will result in you all being back in contention in 2017.

If Idaho (for one more season anyway) and ULL can continue to build while USA and Southern step up, next season could be a marquee year for the Sun Belt as a whole. There could be 7 teams with winning records as long as there are a few upsets out of conference.

The sad fact of the schools in this conference is that games against top P5 teams are required to subsidize budgets resulting in losses that could be wins if scheduling was more in line with what schools from the AAC and MWC are able to do.

Nobody was saying that was the expectation for the program but with a year one staff making a bowl might have given them a pass for one more year.

We have done well in all our P5 games except one where our starting QB was out for the entire game and Upshaw threw eleventy billion ints. No moral victories for us but we gained respect playing most until the last possessions. I dont mind playing good P5's just hate losing the home game. If we are ever going to get respect it is not going to come from winning jsut against the G5 anyway.

2017 schedules were posted in another thread and I don't see many opportunities for wins. Many games are against teams that will begin in the Top 15 and therein lies the issue with Sun Belt scheduling. We don't get the benefit of playing mid-level P5 teams that the Top of G5 conferences generally match-up fairly well with. App actually gets Wake Forest at home, however I believe they will be much improved and the last time App played a Dave Clausen coached team they were beaten fairly convincingly (Armanti threw 5 interceptions in a playoff loss to Richmond, though he was playing hurt).

If Southern had Fritz this year, I have a sneaky feeling that win against Ole Miss would've been within the realm of possibility.
