Summers bar for next year
It appears Summers will get a 2nd year so just wondering what othe SB fans think of this -- what number of wins realistically would Summers need to get av3rd year?
This has been debated on our board and the range goes anywhere from 6 wins to 9

That is just stupid. Y'all should fire him and make a run at Chadwell from CSU. He can continue the option at GS, while winning.

I'd say 6 at a minimum and at least 1 of 6 must be against App and/or GSU. I think that's going to be a tall task with all the senior talent GS is graduating.

I agree with GaSo fans that he was not a good hire, as I thought it when he was first hired. However, if you fire him after one year, that may turn off some potential coaches you may want to hire as they might think that if they don't have a good first year that they will get canned too. GaSo is definitely stuck in a tough spot.

Our AD has apparently told some of our big boosters he will be back next year but he must meet certain expectations-- whatever they are

They frankly should fire him.
If you accept one bad season, it means a 6 win season becomes an improvement.

If GS ends next year with their only losses to Auburn, Indiana, App, Troy, and AState (or some combination), he stays. Anything beyond that, probably not.

Depends on how much your school is willing to pay for a buyout. The less wins the more likely cough up the money. If your AD is like ours, and I doubt anyone can be that bad, 6 wins gets you bowl eligible and a contract extension.

We were already going to struggle through a rebuilding year next year, so I think we're just kicking the can down the road.

RE: Summers bar for next year
I always felt a Head Coach should get at least 3 years to get some of his own recruits on the field, implement his system and to be able to see the direction of the program. That said with the amount of returning talent GS had returning from last year it's hard to stomach a lost year like this one. Maybe the players didn't fit the system, but on offense it was hard to determine what the system was trying to be. Give him one more year and you'll be able to tell what the eye test of the offensive system tells you. The good news is there are a couple of very good FCS option oriented head coaches out there that could bring the traditional option system back to GS as is tradition.

GS plays two P5 schools a year to help with the budget, they aren't buying out a head coach after one year. Anyone expecting that doesn't understand GS's situation. I don't think any SBC has the cash to do so reasonably.

your absolutely right, potential coaches don't want to see a coach fired after one year, that sends red flags that perhaps the GS athletic dept doesn't know what the hell they are doing, but on the other hand recruits will learn quickly that he might not be around after next year, which probably will influence their decision. GS is in a tough spot.

The buyout is not the issue, it's not a lump sum. Personally I think the fact that our 2 most recent coaches have parlayed their time at GS into double+ the money would be enough to outweigh the fact that 1 coach is let go after 1 year. Coaches have egos, I think a competent coach would be confident in his own ability to turn things around here. Plus the next guy would have at a bare minimum 2 years, not only because you wouldn't want to do 1 and done twice in a row, but also because they'll be walking in to a much worse situation than what Summers did.

RE: Summers bar for next year
When is the last time an FBS coach was let go after only one year(without scandal or NCAA problems)??
Ever? Decades ago? IMHO it would be unheard of to take such action.

Ellis Johnson was fired from Southern Miss after 1 year.
