This entire thread doesn't even begin to address the subject of the governor's speech, that the education system is failing children of color. But the pin heads on the left are using a slip of the tongue to deflect from the abject failure of the schools because it goes against entrenched teacher unionism.

Why not deal with the issue?

Socratic.

Your heart is in the right place but when you immediately go to the teacher's unions it shows bias. Teachers can't collectively bargain in Ga. so your entrenched teacher unionism is off base in my opinion.
I believe schools are just a mirror of their communities. When you have a good community you'll have a good public school. Struggling communities will have schools that struggle. Money the vast majority of time can be an answer but I'll be damned if beauracracies don't horse that up too. I was sickened a couple of months ago to learn Cleveland had this windfall of money open up to them and the vast majority of that money went to new principals, new curriculum coordinators, PEOPLE WHO DONT ADD UP TO A HILL OF BEANS in comparison to a teacher who is in front of kids 7 hours a day.
I think it's human nature for people to always look out for themselves at the end. Very rare is the person who looks out for what's best in the system. Instead of Cleveland hiring on 386 new administrators they should have hired on 1000 new teachers.

Just my 2 cents.

Quote:The big-money campaign to defeat Gov. Nathan Deal’s proposed constitutional amendment allowing the state to take over failing schools is largely being bankrolled so far by the nation’s largest teachers union and its Georgia affiliate.

Yeah I researched that too. If you can't collectively bargain you might rank just below the PTA meetings. They have no teeth. I wonder what kind of worth they have?

And I can tell you one other thing. It's not much of a bankroll.

And as boroeagle said he was just responding to the NAACP, to paraphrase, if the National Association to Advance Colored People wants to advance colored people....

This amendment is all about failed districts trying to hold onto control of the money so they can spend it on adults as Mach points out. The districts with the most failing schools, Atlanta and DeKalb, have implemented major programs in these failing schools only because this amendment is out there. Those two also have the highest number of administrative people per student. They have had decades and done nothing for some of these schools. This amendment is an essential element to hold the districts' feet to the fire.
