Yeah outside of Akron and Miami we haven't come close to facing a decent QB. TN, ODU, GaSt and ULL didn't throw the ball around on us because the QB play was not even average. Troy and Idaho will have success through the air no question. Our coverage is way too soft and these QB's will nickel and dime it all the way down the field. Hell I'm afraid of Southern's pass game this year. You'll see on Sat how far our CB's line up off the line. We are so afraid of getting beat deep.
I think that's by design, we want teams to throw short passes and bubble screens, we are fastest defensive unit in the SBC from side line to side line, qb throws a quick screen, thinks its an easy 7 or 8 yd pitch and throw , but its really just a 3 or 4 gain. As far this game, Idaho's qb has a strong enough arm to complete a lot of tight passes in the middle of the field where we are most vulnerable. I think they will move the ball and score some points, but unless we turn the ball over, I don't think their defense is going to slow us down too much. Look for a high scoring game, Idaho puts atleast 21 on the board, but I think we're in the high 30s.
Woody's philosophy has always been keep everything in front of you, don't give up the home run and play tough in the red zone. Been working like a charm for several years now. #1 Red Zone defense in the nation last year, currently at #18 against a much tougher schedule.
I was commenting on this to a friend about the UL game. UL moved the ball very well between the 20's, but App's defense defended the 20 yard line like it was the goal line. I'd be interested to see how many plays the Cajuns actually ran inside the 20. I know they crossed it once, then got push back outside of it on the next play or two.

I just looked it up. Ragin Cajuns ran three consecutive plays in the red zone, then got sacked for 6 yards pushing them to the 22 yard line and a missed 39 yard field goal. Those three plays were the only ones run inside Apps 20. They never got past the 16 yard line the whole game.

SUN BELT STREAK – App improved to 15-1 in their last 16 conference games dating back to the middle of 2014. The Mountaineers have won eight consecutive road games, the second longest streak in Sun Belt history.
Does anyone know the record for conference road wins?
High of 47 and 20 mph winds in the forecast for Saturday.

9?
Too bad we don't have one of the warm weather teams coming up for a visit this weekend. 47 with 20 mph winds feels more like 37.

I imagine North Texas has that record. They went two full seasons and a half without losing a sun belt game.

Good call looks like they had 11 in a row from 2002 to 2005.

That should make your streak the 3rd longest then. AState won 10 straight on the road between 2011 and 2013. I'm wondering if the North Texas streak doesn't count for some reason. the 2001/2002 years in the football conference was unusual. In those early years it was impossible to set up a schedule in time where everyone played a full round robin, so each team played a "designated conference game" a game against an OOC team that counted as a league game in the standings.

Once again, App just feels like a bad matchup for Idaho. For most of this year we've done a very good job of moving into enemy territory but stalling out and settling for 3. Linehan & Petrino are happy to take the underneath passes all day but that stops working in the red zone and we haven't had a back who could pound it in from there.
We may have found a better formula from in close recently with Brantley replacing Duckworth at RB near the goal line. We'll see on Saturday.
Thank God our kicker is awesome.

I hate to reinforce the bad matchup statement but as stated earlier winds will be 15-25 MPH Saturday in Boone which will likely throw the kicking game a bit.

The issue is whether or not Idaho can stretch the field. If they can't stretch the field, they won't be able to win. I don't believe their running game is strong enough to really create and equality between what the offense and defense are going to face, and the dinking and dunking will work between the 20's as mentioned several times over. App's offense is geared to work in foul weather and unless Idaho finds a way to stop the run and stretch the field on offense, they won't win. It's really that simple.

Bred by the Nez Perce tribe near what later became Moscow, Idaho. The Appaloosa Horse Club and Museum is located about a mile from the U of Idaho campus. See, it's all connected.

So at first you pull for a close loss to P5 teams for the good of the conference, now you are simply pulling against App. It really is too bad that conference scheduling had to get in the way of a budding rivalry game.
