After BDK pointed out that we were dead last in the CAA I wanted to check out specifics. I got at least the start of a breakdown going and there are problems all across the board. So many mental errors. In 6 games we've only had three quarters with no penalties. So far it hasn't affected the outcome of any games, though it could have made the UNC game closer and extended the margin in some of the other games.

The CCSU and UNC game were especially brutal for penalties. That's a nice spreadsheet. Good job.

According to the post-game, he said this was very unlike his teams and said it will be fixed. He takes a lot of pride in his teams having a lot of discipline and seems to really bother him (good thing). Penalties are going down, but not enough. I do have faith in this coaching staff taking care of this.

I don't have the 2014 stats, but I had always felt we had too many penalties under Withers. Last year, we committed 90 penalties for an average of 7.5 / 74.1 yds/game.

This year through 6 games, we're a tad better at 7.33 penalties per game/ 65.67 yards per game.

The numbers are at least trending the right way, but that could be just a result of having fewer plays per game.

He was also referring to some of the mistakes on defense. Having a receiver run right down the middle of the field in a prevent defense between Jordan Brown and Raven Greene must have amazed him. It was as if he was a ghost. Neither of them so much as flipped their hips, they just let him run right on by. He had to be pretty pissed off about that. That's inexplicable. The absolute last mistake you can make in that situation is to let a guy get behind you. Even if you see your teammate blowing his assignment, you abandon yours and run with that guy. Thankfully we were up 14 but that type of thing can never happen.

We have been through 3 coaching staffs now and we seem to pretty consistently be heavily penalized.

I suppose we often play very aggressive and a little cocky. Deep playoff runs, need to reign this back some and we need to play with intensity - but fewer penalties.

Nice spreadsheet. As pointed out penalties are trending down. If not for the dumb Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty at the end of the W&M game I'm not sure we're even talking about it.

Also good to see the 'brain fart' penalties are dropping. Only one false start, one illegal procedure, one offside, and no delay of game in the last three games. Thirteen of those combined in the first three games.

Brown played a terrible game against W&M. Not sure who the next man up would be, but it would not surprise me to see Brown riding the bench this week.

Thanks, just listened to his Tuesday presser. He was definitely ticked off by that. He said he talked to those responsible both after the game and he said as recently as 15 mins prior to the presser. Said something along the lines of "How do I explain to our Vice President why you can't stop a run on a zone read?" i know I probably got the last part of the quote completely wrong, but you get the idea. Needless to say he felt like the player completely understands his screw up. I do think that problem will be fixed pretty quickly as ticked off as he was about it, especially since UNH is probably going to be doing it a LOT on Saturday.
It comes down to discipline. Not just with attitude, but football discipline. Staying with your assignment no matter what and not trying to be a hero.

I rewatched that big pass play that set up WMs final trash time TD and there was four or five defenders in the backfield. Every single one of them let the WM receiver run right by them without even flinching. It looked like they weren't even trying and no one stepped up to try to cover that receiver.
