Some residents in the area said they weren’t fazed by the sound of gunfire, which they described as a normal occurrence in the neighborhood.

Brenna McCormick, a 22-year-old senior at Northern Illinois University, lives with her husband in an apartment building near the parking lot where the shooting occurred. They at home when McCormick said the shots rang out.

“We’ve been here for over a year, there’s always gun shots,” McCormick said. “It’s not like as bad as Chicago, but it’s still present.”
