OT: Alger still thinks we're a small New England liberal arts college
Imagine if we put this focus and resources into academic excellence?

My college , just like the country is being turned into a panzy ass vast land of progressiveness. For God's sake please don't anyone put a Trump sign up anywhere on campus. It will reduce many to tears and feeling threatened. They will have to find their safe place.

The only thing worse than political correctness is the ridiculous amount of whining it causes.

RE: OT: Alger still thinks we're a small New England liberal arts college
Oh my...........

Again, what's almost as bad is they put it out and when called on it they back off.

James Madison University’s director of communications Bill Wyatt told The College Fix via email that “this was just an exercise, prior to orientation, to get our volunteers to understand how language affects others. The list was not distributed to our first-year students nor were the volunteers instructed not to use the phrases.”

Yet page one of the handout, written by JMU, reads that orientation leaders should “use this handout as a resource” to help accomplish the goal of creating a “safe and inclusive environment for your first year students.”

Either it's important or it's not. JMU uses such squishy language about EVERYTHING!

RE: OT: Alger still thinks we're a small New England liberal arts college
I know I'm in the minority on here on many issues (man I miss Tremonkey/Magoo and hope Dolley's around haha), but even I have a really hard time with this. Having discussions or exercises considering the impact and potential unintended harm of certain ways of thinking or speaking is one thing. In other words, merely encouraging student leaders to “take some time to reflect on your prejudices and biases, and how that might affect your interactions with students" does not trouble me. But this clearly seems to be more insidious than that. A state actor (JMU) telling those same leaders to “use this handout as a resource” to help accomplish the goal of creating a “safe and inclusive environment for your first year students" is troubling on a number of levels. Even putting aside the 1A considerations, it's not exactly promoting the "free" exchange of ideas that is supposed to be a university's raison d'être.

I'm not sure Alger is the right fit, but hopefully he's not micromanaging so much that he created this list. Seems more like we should be upset with those managing the orientation, no?

Yeah, they need their trigger warning before that microagression. Then tbey'll need a timeout to retreat to their safe spaces. We've raised a generation of puss*es.

Orientation Manager: we are going to instruct our student volunteeers not to use these phrases because they do not create a safe and inclusive environment.

Alger: (tilts back his backwards cowboy hat). Yes. Excellent. We don't want to widen the diversity gap by using these phrases.

Orientation manager: okay. I'll make sure they get handed out before orientation.

Alger: great. This reminds me of the principled stand I took on COA. Just in case, I will craft a wish/washy lawyer speak quasi denial in case anyone finds out we are actually handing it out.

University distributes seven-page speech guide

I was a Resident Adviser for 2 years (97-98, 98-99), and it was very common at that time for the office of Residence Life to distribute materials and/or training that was very much in this spirit and tone. This is nothing new.

If you actually read the guide, it's all pretty harmless stuff that our students and leaders can keep in mind to make the university a more inclusive and welcoming place. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that inclusivity and a welcoming spirit are part of what makes JMU such a special place.

Holy overreaction batman. This was a few sheets distributed to the FROGs before orientation in probably a giant packet of information. You've already spent more time whining and complaining about this then the FROGs spent reading these papers.

You have hurt my feelings by calling my post on a message board an overreaction and by comparing me to a gender specific flying mammal.
