Shoop
I didn't realize that Bob Shoop is the Tennessee vols def coordinator. Just hired this year. Tn looks like it will beat the gators today for the first time since 2004 - Florida didn't get a first down in 2nd half until 8 mins left.

You may recall Shoop was our def coord in 2009 when we had what I think was our best defense ever.

RE: Shoop
I just wonder what the difference is between Shoop's defense and Andrews' defense. Personnel should be about same, but it sure is different.

Negative.

Shoop's golden year in 2009 we went two-deep at every position with starting-caliber players. DL had 10 contributors at the start of the season. After injuries to O'Brien, Pradhanang, and Robertson, we still had 6-7 defensive lineman who were arguably equal to anyone on our current roster.

We had six good linebackers; the second string included two future all-conference players. (Mines and Cook). Injuries derailed Dante's career but he could have been one of the best linebackers we ever had.

That 2009 defense turned out five NFL players: Tracy, Lissemore, Webb, Couplin, and Caldwell. Couplin was redshirted. Very rare for an FCS program to do that.

That team was two plays: bad coverage on a fake punt, and a bad call on a deep throw by Villanova - from a national title. Some more aggressive play calling would have helped.

Now it is true that Shoop may have been better at developing the players who took the field, but I think the raw material in his final two years was pretty special.

2010 was not quite as strong, but still was very good. Pradhanang's injuries were a big factor.

Since then we haven't had the same success. I think the closest we came was the three-game stretch in 2013.

RE: Shoop
Based on second-hand info, lots of Shoop DNA in Andrews' schemes.

Andrews doesn't have 3 guys (2 of whom will be draft picks) who will make NFL rosters like Shoop had.

The 2009 team was the best I have seen, sadly a few things did not go our way, or that could have been the team for the records. The 2013 defense (Boone) was very, very solid, close to the 2009.

2010 for me is sadly tagged for the day I spent at JMU (I think we were ranked #1) when we lost with JMU not completing a pass.

Agree on JMU. I remember watching that game in a lecture hall at Penn State Law while studying for finals. The blocked punt was deadly. We also could not tackle Daequan Scott.

As for 2013, I remember we were blowing out an opponent near the end of the season and we were finally healthy on defense and for the first time in years, had 6 starting-quality d-linemen healthy (Reilly, Sinnott, Stinnie, Beerhalter, Claytor, Coleman). Then Stinnie got hurt again, Velasquez got hurt, and we went down the drain.
