Game 4 - Elon
I am as optimistic and supportive of Tribe athletic teams as anyone on here, but the opening TD drive against NC State is the only sustained possession in which this year's team has shown what everyone believed and hoped they were capable of this season. The evidence since has supported that something is wrong. The whole has simply not added to the pieces, and the typical CAA gauntlet ahead is not the time for it to have been figured out. Would be a monumental turnaround. Certainly hope proved wrong.

I truly miss seeing a classical Laycock offense that could nickel and dime all the way down the field more than once a game. This young defense needs it.

I think this is our worst home loss since 1999. We were dusted by Furman 52-6 in our 3rd game of the season.

We responded with a gutty 42-30 win at a decent Northeastern and then a 45-10 thrashing of nationally ranked Villanova back at Zable.

Not sure how we will respond here but history shows we bounce back. Even last year after the disappointing loss at Delaware, we had probably our best game of the year just ripping through Villanova.

We were grossly unprepared against Elon.

And for all the haughtiness about Elon, they have competed ok over the past 20 years against App and Georgia Southern. We would be wise to lose the attitude and come to grips there is a rival south of us that we can't take lightly.

RE: Game 4 - Elon
I am concerned that we have really slipped since the 2009 season, granted that was best team I recall, though the team we had when Mike Cook got his knee rolled at VMI was a solid team too, as was the 2004 team. 2010 we were way overrated, witness the debacle at JMU and then the way GSU ran all over us. Since then we have not had solid QB play, and since the 2013 departure of Boone the defense has slipped. The losses have been horrible, and too often on TV. See Delaware last year and the game that unfolded on TV when folks were to see our stadium upgrade. I do not blame the players, they work hard, and have the demands of both football and schoolwork. We have had plenty of talent too, if we had QB's that could throw, imagine how McBride's career would have ended. Even after the dream defense of 2009, look at the junior and senior seasons for Claytor, Rhodes and H-Carson. The NEC champ (I think on TV too) made us look bad, and then UR killed us (on TV). We have lost to UR I think now 5 or 6 times straight. While I was happy we made the playoffs last year, had we faced either Lee or Robertson they would have had their way with the defense, and we would have been sitting out the post season. UR's new coach has not lost to us since taking over at UR.

I know many will not like this outline, but to me it bears reflection. I still buy season tickets, come to all home games, and some away games as well, but have not come away from a game as down as I did last week. It was to be our moment, showing off the stadium, under the lights on TV. Guys, we played Elon, who lost to G-Webb, and barely beat a DII school. We did not lose on a fluke play, if not for Dedmon, we would have scored a FG the entire game. Again, this was Elon, not Stony Brook, or Delaware, or JMU.

The coaches did not have the team ready to play. With this game now over, let's see if the coaches can patch and meld a new version of the 2016 team. On the positive, I like the way the younger guys have been playing on defense, guys like Parker, Murray, Jones, Laster et al.....have looked solid, and I look forward to more good things from those guys.

RE: Game 4 - Elon
Don't forget last year's team...while the Richmond losses were stunning, the team won 9 games including a great, classic come-from-behind win over JMU on NBC tv at Zable and impressive wins over Villanova, Stony Brook and a playoff win over Duquesne. A share of the CAA championship was pretty good, too. Not as good as 2009-10, but a solid Laycock team.

I haven't given up yet on this squad. How they bounce back at New Hampshire will tell us quite alot.

Why do you want TribeNomad to move on?

Funny. I was thinking of this game too.

The loss to University of Delaware in 2007 was the definition of deflating. We may have put of 31 points in this, but it wasn't ever a contest. The "Omar Cuff Game" was just terrible.

RE: Game 4 - Elon
So I just watched the game recap and a couple of things stuck out to me:

The punt block at the beginning of the game seemed like a case a confused assignments. Murray ended up having to try to block two guys as part of the shield and couldn't handle both. Hopefully we fix this going forward or it could be a long year on special teams.

I don't think Cluley's first pick was his fault. He definitely overthrew Dedmon but it should have just bounced harmlessly to the turf as Dedmon had a few steps on his man. But for some reason Armstrong ran an almost identical route and his guy peeled off and picked the ball. Either we are running some strange (and counter-productive) route combos or Armstrong ran the wrong one on that play.

I thought the muffed punt was a bad snap but it actually went through Windmuller's hands. It was a little off to the side but he should have had that one.

As mentioned before Funderburke is the man for hustling off the field with that hurt knee. I watched the replay a couple times and still have no idea how it happened. But they always say the non-contact injuries can be real nasty ones.

Is Dorka nursing an injury this season? Last year we would trot him out for 50+ yard field goals all the time but we've been very hesitant this year. And even his FG in this game looked a little ugly.

Ken was openly limping while running. I don't think he's healthy yet.

Cluley's second pick missed high on a deep ball but he was just unlucky to have a safety sitting super deep. It wouldn't have mattered anyway though because it was 4th down.

His third pick was so stupid. It's like he thought the play was blown dead or something. It was horrendous.

The first pick, if you watch the entire play was a four vertical route. All the receivers ran a go, no one ran the wrong route. Dedmon down the hash, Armstrong down the numbers and Caskin down the center. Both Armstrong and Dedmon had steps. By the time you saw the receivers in the video each had reacted. Dedmon slide more to the outside, Armstrong slid in. The pass was off a bit and it was picked off, it was over one receiver and under the other. The other team made a play, it's as simple as that.

This week can get get us back on track. Guys should be healthy allowing more rotation keeping legs fresh. Start with high percentage passes, get Cluley back in a grove. Let the athletes make plays. The receivers have proven to make all the catches. They should trust each other, take what the defense gives them and set up the deep balls with short passes.

Game 4 - Elon
Reading today's WSJ dealing with school rankings; Wm and Mary sneaks into top one hundred with a ninety two. Elon comes in at 164. We got them in this arena.
