I have to remember this generation is somewhat different .... if I had read that article Nogre posted before enrolling at W&M, I would have turned tail and run to Charlottesville or Lexington as quickly as I could.

Happiest students, great ROI, nicest campus, etc would've turned you off?

I attended W&M because I knew how I'd act at a party school. Alcoholics shouldn't be bartenders.

Committed to academics and service, tolerant of people who aren't exactly like themselves... god WM students these days are terrible. If only we could go back to the good ole days when WM was a regional school for good Virginia boys and minorities and gays were properly kept in their place.

RE: University/College Rankings
Easy on the outrage fellows. I said "before enrolling at W&M." At that time I was 18, incredibly naïve and had just spent four years playing lacrosse in prep school. Seeing people wear blue jeans took getting used to. I ended up at W&M because I was fourth generation, my parents couldn't pay for me to play lacrosse at a Division III school or in the Patriot League, and I got more aid than at UVA. W&M for me was a bit of a culture shock for the very reasons explained in the article. I was not necessarily happy about it, and yes, I probably would have "fit in" better as a freshman at W&L or UVA. But with the benefit of hindsight, I see how that environment changed me for the better.

+1 this closely mirrored my experience as a freshman at the College.

RE: University/College Rankings
Good to see, still ranked high and gaining ground. I would like to see us pass BC and Wake, both just above us.

Some others of interest:
Elon now ranked #1 regional university in the South.
JMU now dropping to 8th in same category if I read it correctly.
Northeastern not far behind us at #39 nationally ranked university.
Richmond fans crowing about a #27 ranking though it doesn't sound as if they realize its among national liberal arts colleges (Williams, Amherst, Washington & Lee - mostly D3 schools), not national universities.

RE: University/College Rankings
Look at CNU acting like they want to be respected! Nice work. Man, their president deserves a raise. For those of you in the know, to what do you attribute their rise to "distinction," and how do HS'ers compare them to the likes of ODU?

RE: University/College Rankings
CNU was miles ahead of ODU when I graduated. They had just updated their dorms and other facilities so it was a popular choice for kids who couldn't get into JMU.

CNU's rise began when they hired Coach Kelchner. All improvements should be attributed to him.

RE: University/College Rankings
I am displeased that our US News "commitment to undergraduate teaching" ranking seems to be falling...
