Less than flattering piece on Doerr/Leadership at Kleiner.

Second guessing VC's firms choices on early stage investing choices seems like low-hanging fruit.

On the surface, Kleiner gets a ton of historical credit and 'brand' from being early investors in companies from 25-years ago like Google and Amazon. However below the surface and analyzing the past 20-years, I took the piece not to be so much picking apart early stage investment choices at Kleiner but rather how poor/dysfunctional the leadership of the Kleiner firm while Doerr was at the helm. Lots of missteps on succession, firm strategy, roles/responsibilities, governance, and overall controversy (e.g., PR blunder from Pao case). Not the stuff that one would want to associate with an "Institute of New Leaders" at Rice

The whole Institute is absurd. But, hey, if the only way Doerr would give money is via his own institute, I'm not gonna say no.

Remember, Gore did invent the internet!

And, George Shultz did Theranos. (mentally adding this to the list of corrupting influence of money and politics, including MLM schemes - many current and ex-presidents shilled for Amway and other pyramid schemes, tobacco lawsuits, potentially think-tank boards and even academic postings).

Let's have a collective non-partisan face-palm moment here...

Schultz gets a lot of the attention from his position on that board, because it was his nephew that was a whistle-blower and was a large part of the story, which makes for great drama. On that board too, lest we forget, was William Perry (Clinton's sec. of defense); Henry Kissinger (god of all foreign affairs in DC); Sam Nunn and Bill Frist (former senators); James "Mad Dog" Mattis; Riley Bechtel; and Kovacevich (former CEO of Wells Fargo). That may have been the most decorated board in America.

... and supremely lacking in biology/biotech experience (notwithstanding Frist's MD and pre-politics experience as a heart & lung transplant surgeon).

That's all correct. Shultz stands out for trying to reassure his grandson that it was all legitimate, but I'd forgotten about the others.
