2016-2017 Men's basketball previews
Down to top 77 and UNCW still hasn't been previewed. Hope we can live up to the expectations! We're ahead of Minnesota, Monmouth, Auburn, UAB, Memphis, South Carolina.
All these teams would be good ones to look for home and home deals. Would love to see Auburn, USC or Memphis come to Trask.

CofC has played UNCW well since coming into the CAA. No surprise here. I've thought from the beginning that UNCW and CoC would rise to the top of the CAA in men's basketball, I just didn't think it would happen this quickly. Toss up.
If these predictions hold true, the CAA tournament in Charleston should be entertaining with big UNCW crowds and the big home crowds for the Cougars.

RE: 2016-2017 Men's basketball previews
He's REALLY going against the grain because everybody has UNCW to repeat, but he is VERY well informed and makes a good case for C of C. C of C has to beat UNCW to show that they are for real. Can they? Yes they certainly can, C of C is very good and I think that it will come down to those 2 teams. At the end of the day, I still feel that UNCW, like most everybody else, is the team to beat simply because they have TREMENDOUS offensive ability. When it's guts and nuts time, you need a guy that going to deliver and UNCW has at least 3 of them. Guys that can get their own shot and cause problems. Who will that be for C of C? Will it be Chealey? Will it be someone else? I dunno, but I do know that their D is TOP NOTCH period so it's going to come down to what I'm getting at. Two great teams and C of C is due to beat the Hawks at some point. Their too good not to think otherwise. Time will tell on that.
UNCW was fortunate to escape the scare last year at C of C and especially in the CAA tourney and if it weren't for a heads up double down by Ingram....the Hawks wouldn't have won. Homeboy was going to win it for C of C. IMHO...it's payback for all the years that Draper pulled out freaking miracles to upset UNCW when they were good-they had no business winning those game! Good rivalry and class all the way with both fan bases. I like C of C a lot and feel that they are a terrific rival and if they were to win it, I'd pull for them. They are without question UNCW's biggest obstacle to repeat.
The Pride will be good and possibly NE and JMU but the Cougars are the team that I'm watching. And, I really believe that they are for real this year!

Towson comes in at preseason 73rd and 2nd in CAA in the top 144. Find it hard to believe that JMU with 4 starters back is picked no higher than 6th in CAA by either of these preseason forecasts. My thoughts are UNCW will be high 40,s to mid 50,s

Teams tend to get underrated a bit when they are entering their first season with a new coach. JMU should improve under Rowe by default in the post-Matt Brady era (he was a very mediocre coach when it came to winning league games), but until he proves it, the analysts are probably not going to put the Dukes in the top 4. I wouldn't be surprised if the coach's poll leaves them in that range as well.
Remember, in Keatts' first season, UNCW was picked to finish 9th in the preseason by the CAA coaches. We ended up finishing tied for first. Just never really know.

2016-2017 Men's basketball previews
On top of that the league as a whole was young last year. The teams above them didn't lose a lot either and like 08 said, coaching change. The teams picked at the top have proven they can get there and stay there. I doubt there's much slide from teams like UNCW, CofC, WM, and Hofstra. Honestly, does anyone think JMU could finish above any of those four this year? Hofstra is likely their best shot and that's a tough hill to climb.

Athlon magazine is already out. Saw it in Charleston earlier today. A whopping 1 page on the CAA, while every P5 team gets a page. UNCW picked 1st in the league, then Towson, W&M, CofC, Hofstra, JMU, Elon, Northeastern, Drexel, UD.
Adala Moto from Towson, Brantley from CofC, Flemmings, Gustys from Hofstra, Prewitt from W&M the All-CAA team.
Flemmings picked as POY.

Down to #66 and UNCW is still on the board ahead of Baylor now.

Arizona State, coached by Bobby Hurley (2nd season) and featuring an elite recruitment class this season, checks in at # 60.
Still haven't made it to UNCW yet.
The last two years we've come in under the radar with low expectations. Two consecutive CAA championships and a run at Duke in the NCAA's means we won't surprise anyone this year.
Hope we can live up to expectations.
Wondering what our highest pre-season rankings were in our heyday?

82 is quite right. The last two years we've been able to sneak up on folks. Not so this year. We will have a giant bullseye on our backs. The Hawks will be the beneficiary of everyone's best shot. Lace 'em up tight and hold on!

The good news is-they have a very weak schedule.

With Buzz, we would have had a 7 win year with this schedule. We'll start the year somewhere in the top 60. Weak schedule or not, if we win we'll have a legitimate shot at an at-large bid to the Big Dance.

I would rather have this schedule than what Buzz tried to do but they have no shot at an at large bid-zero. They would have to go at least 16-2 in the CAA and lose the final to have any chance, that will not happen.
The days of the CAA being a 2 bid conference are long gone.

I agree with Mullet here. I can't see any way in which this schedule gives us a shot at an At Large.

Agreed, on top of beating Clemson and st bony on the road and hoping they have great seasons. 3 days in March

We'll start this year with a pretty good RPI out of the gate. If we have a record like last year, we'll have an RPI in the 40's. Wins over Clemson or Bonny will give us a bigger name victory than last year. Plus, the close game against Duke last year will be on the minds of the committee.

The game was not that close to be on anybody's mind unless you are a UNCW fan. Not a buzzer win for Duke and while I thought it was a good game, I never thought UNCW was going to win it. The Seahawks have to win the CAA tourney to make the NCAA this season-just the way it works. There is always the if and I see that at no more than 3 loses for the year.
