RE: OT: Tom Brady to speak at UNCW in March of 2017
I was told that he's coming because he feels that UNCW will be the team to beat so that his "message" will get more air time away from the greater Boston area. That "message" is that it doesn't pay to be a cheater. As it turns out...Tom apparently feels bad about all of the things that he's done. Letting the air out of footballs is only part of it and, of course, not being truthful about it. He apparently wants to be a bigger man now and confess his mistakes so let's all not throw apples at him, but simply listen to his message. Again, this may not be true and I really doubt that he owns up to being a first class cheater, but it could happen!

I was just a a conference that Goodell and Kraft attended. I suppose they may have crossed paths at some point but I didn't see it.

I'm no Goodell fan (he penalized my team $16mil for something that wasn't even a violation) and I'm no Pats fan...that said, Kraft couldn't be a nicer guy fwiw.

As far as Brady goes, he clearly cheated but stats prove that his QB Rating actually improved after Deflategate.

The "game" in question, 14-10 in the first half with supposedly under inflated balls. Issue rectified at halftime, Pats outscore Colts 28-0 in the second half with fully inflated balls.

SMH , haters gonna hate.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I'll just say pointing to the specifics of the playoff game against Indy isn't compelling to anyone outside of NE and their fan base. The point is not whether or not a cheater needed to cheat to win a specific game, it's the fact that the particular team, person, entity is willing to cheat to win if that's what it takes.

I left this generic so not to draw conclusions. I understand your position, as well as SN08's position. Deflate gate isn't a big deal to me, and if isolated, I think most would agree it's a non-issue.

RE: OT: Tom Brady to speak at UNCW in March of 2017
Once a cheater, always a cheater. It's why golfers pretty much refuse to play with a guy who cheated once. Can't trust him ever again. Pats have been caught twice, and we also know there's other shady stuff....like opposing team's electronic equipment "malfunctioning" on key third downs, and playbooks mysteriously disappearing out of opposing team's locker rooms in Foxboro.

We also know the Pats have won home games at a statistically impossible rate compared to their road record. We also know that their running backs have been fumbling at a rate much less than the rest of the league for years too. We know they cheat in many other ways than they got caught for, and have been doing it for nearly 2 decades.

Just read about Ernie Adams sometime. That'll explain everything you need to know about the Pats organization: https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2015/...story.html

Quote:Nobody knows him. Nobody knows what he does. Nobody remembers much about working with him, even if they worked with him for more than a dozen years.

When Adams worked with Belichick in Cleveland, Browns owner Art Modell famously said, “I’ll pay anyone here $10,000 if they can tell me what Ernie Adams does. I know he does something, and I know he works for me, and I know I pay him, but I’d love to know what it is.’’

Yeah, that's not shady at all. Having a guy on the payroll who no one has a clue about what he does, and also was implicated in Spygate directly:

Quote:In 2007, as part of Spygate, it was revealed that Adams received tapes from a "third camera" that recorded opponents' defensive signals from a location on the sideline, in violation of a league memo issued by commissioner Roger Goodell. Belichick confirmed this was the case, but said that they were only a small part of the "mosaic" that were the Patriots' offensive game plans at the time.

But yeah, I guess you can just chalk this up to "Haters gonna hate". Not like the Patriots have given anyone a reason to be suspicious, right? None whatsoever.

I never hated the 90s Bulls even if that wasn't my team. Same with the 6-time champion Steelers. I didn't even hate the late 90's Yankees all that much even as a Mets fan.

But yes, I most definitely hate the Patriots and what they stand for. Because they're not legitimate. And the entire New England community embraces the culture of cheating too, because they have no soul.

RE: OT: Tom Brady to speak at UNCW in March of 2017
"A more legitimate way to examine the question is to compare the Patriots’ total record under Belichick before Spygate broke (including the offending Sept. 9, 2007, game against the Jets) to their record after. While the Patriots were taping opposing signals, they won 69.3 percent of their 127 games (including the playoffs), but since they ostensibly quit the practice, their winning percentage has been even higher — 75.6 percent — in 123 games. At a glance, it seems rule-bending didn’t add much of note to the Patriots’ chances of winning."
this was from 2014. When i have the time i'll look up his home away splits, it's not as "alarming" as you say it is 08.

Right, my point was his stats improved after the PSI was corrected. I said that.

But, he did cheat, he lied to investigators, he destroyed his cell phone to hide evidence, and he doesn't want to accept the (far too harsh) consequences. 4 games is ridiculous but, unfortunately for him, this whole situation is more of an indictment on the Pats organization rather than Brady alone.

The real issue that SN08 raised is why UNCW would invite a person like Brady to your campus. What does that say to kids who were or will be disciplined for academic fraud when the school celebrates such an individual so long as that individual brings a big name?

It's a valid question but, in my view, illegally tampering with footballs isn't in the same ballpark as shoving your elbow into Coach Shaver in the handshake line, domestic violence, nonmedicinal drug use, DUIs, etc.

LOL true. That moment had the right combination of Spruill being kind of a d*ck AND causing a humorous, slightly tongue-in-cheek overreaction. Fun night.

Well, if you're on a CAA messageboard, you are rightly classified as a fanatic and obliged to overreact for the better or worse. It's not like some 9 yo in Omaha is going to pick UNCW or W&M as "his team" because ESPN shows our highlights. Our fans are in it for the long haul come hell or high water and that makes us an outlier.

Definitely true. Makes me sad to see just how many people I run into right here in Wilmington who care very little about the team, when this group we have here and myself have been passionate for so long. But that's starting to shift with success, fortunately. I imagine the same is true in Williamsburg.

RE: OT: Tom Brady
W'burg and W'ton are in similar situations as both are tourist destinations, a nice place to retire, and college towns with a lot to do within a 15 minute drive. Alumnus generally move away post-graduation to work and start a family. Now, you live a couple hours away with 3 kids and a lawn to mow so getting back for games is tough. The Hawks have about double the Tribe's student population so that really helps with home attendance. W&M, fortunately, sees many grads return for retirement and they've got money to donate. Both programs definitely benefit from success but I've witnessed no significant drop off in support during our darker years.

Both schools should be proud of what we've accomplished given competing priorities...we've had very good football and basketball programs for the past several years and our baseball team occasionally overachieves. You guys always have a strong baseball team and your basketball team is back. Most smaller public schools don't field multiple major sports at a high level.
