BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University football defensive back Latrell Gibbs (Kennesaw, Ga./North Cobb) is academically ineligible to participate in the 2016 season, head coach Scott Satterfield announced on Friday. Gibbs will not participate in any team activities with the Mountaineers in 2016. “Academics will always be the first and foremost priority for our program,” Satterfield said. “Our hope is that Latrell will meet the standards that we expect of our student-athletes academically this coming semester and rejoin the team in January.”

This hurts. One of the best cover corners in the Sunbelt and G5 for that matter. Good thing is Soph Brandon Pickney, who was starting opposite Gibbs before getting injured prior to the season, is back. Soph Tae Hayes played a lot of minutes in the second half of the season and was on the field during the late stages of the bowl game. Sr part time starter Mondo Williams is back. Still, we're gonna be thin so a TF is gonna have to step in and provide some solid back up minutes.

Really hate this, because it doesn't really help our chances against App all that much but helps the chances of App's non-conference opponents.

Its a shame that so many football players treat class as a chore, and not a free education.

Hopefully this young man gets his **** strait. It takes longer for some to grow up than others. For my prerequisite snarky comment, I wish it was John Law instead.

yep, this one hurts, but he knew that if he didn't do the work in the classroom, he is out. I would like to bs you guys and say this was no big deal, that we have a couple of guys who would take his place and not see any noticeable drop off in production, but that's probably not going to be the case...dam.

Wow...that will have some repercussions all the way around.

It's a damn shame my alma mater so relentlessly follows all the rules. It's not given here in North Carolina.

Nice signature line but you missed a couple. Col St 0-1 and Middle Tennessee 7-4 (MTSU was Southern's "Hugo Bowl"opponent.)

Damn, that sucks. I'm not sure what kind of team you guys have coming back this year, but if it's anything like last year's team you all were in a great position to bring the Sun Belt some real attention (even more than last year). The amount of picks that kid had last year is unreal. I'm surprised QBs kept throwing to him. When Josh Norman played for us the other teams eventually learned better.

But good on you for upholding academics. That's something Coastal has done well in all of our sports.

We did that with our FB. Missed his whole Jr year then his senior season they kept switching him from LB to FB and back again plus missed 2 games with an injury. Really crappy way to end his career.

Thing is (and this happens everywhere) football programs have staff who's sole job is to keep players academically eligible. They see their grades slipping...they implore the kid to get it together and they still ignore it...it's unbelievable.

Clearly Latrell Gibbs needed an education in being a man who upholds his responsibilities. Good on the university for giving him that.

Agreed, I wouldn't celebrate if the young man was injured but this seems fair game. We're going to need every advantage we can get against App this year.
