W&M Football vs. FBS Opponents : Recent Years
Since we find ourselves in this fun little lull (called the offseason), we at the W&M Sports Blog thought it would be a good idea to document the Tribe's recent near-victories against FBS opponents, going all the way back to 2009--when we beat you know who.

It's interesting to note that in all of these games (minus the UNC one), the FBS teams were in transition at the QB position and/or had first-year starters at the helm. And guess what's happening with this year's opponent, the NC State Wolfpack?

Check out our article below! Interested to hear everyone's thoughts on our chances against NC State in the season opener? LET'S GO TRIBE!!!

LOVE the article. I'm still bitter about all the injuries from the UNC game

UNC - the injuries, especially to the QB which ruined us for a couple of seasons.

Maryland - there was a potential Tribe TD pass that didn't happen which would have won the game.

West Virginia - the personal foul call on the O in the third quarter which led to a momentum switch.

This article produced nothing but agita this morning. Thanks! :-)

Happy Father's Day to all my fellow Indians and members of the Tribe!

P.S. If you really want the blood to flow, write an article about the 1978 robbery by VPI at Lane Stadium.

I too was there to experience that theft.

Here is what hokiesports.com has to say about the conclusion:

Bill Dooley's first season wasn't filled with many bright moments, but Ron Zollicoffer's touchdown catch on the last play of the game lifted Tech to a 22-19 win over William & Mary on Sept. 30. Tribe fans contend that Zollicoffer lost the ball as he hit the ground and the play should not have counted.

Yes, I am still bitter.

Not to mention, which they don't..., the touchdown catch made by the Tribe shortly before that, in the corner of the end zone, that was waved off, saying it was out of bounds.

Ha, Kenan was anything but raucous in that game. I think that might have been the quietest, lamest crowd I've ever seen from a major football program.

On West Virginia - the key play that is still stuck in my head - was late 3rd quarter - we were up or tied at the time - we had WVU backed up inside their 5 yard line. Luke Rhodes had a near pick 6 that he could have just walked into the end zone. Still, we held them and had them punting from the end zone. The WVU punter boomed the kick and we were suddenly back near our own 20 yd line. That killed us.

Yes, and as I recall it was their Homecoming as well. Agreed, it was pretty lame.

RE: W&M Football vs. FBS Opponents : Recent Years
The game plan the coaching staff puts together against these FBS opponents can't be praised enough. They really do a fine job of strategically putting our guys in the best position to win. I love our team, but we just don't have the size or speed to match up with some of the FBS teams we play - this often catches up with us FCS'ers in 4th quarters as we get worn down. As a result, the game plan has always been about clock management (running the ball to shorten the game), conservative play calling to minimize turnovers - no risky plays on 2nd or 3rd and long, field position, and mitigating the big play. I am a bit curious how the game plan will look against NC State given our more high powered offense this year. I'm sure the coaching staff will find the best formula to give our guys a good shot to win.

Playing Labor Day weekend in the afternoon hasn't helped us either. The fact that this year's game is at night might help a little in teh 4th quarter.
