Honestly while yes, I too would love it if we played these schools in home and homes every two years, there is nothing more absurd than state governments or legislatures getting involved in which sports teams play which other state schools. Can't even get the state legislature to adequately fund WM and other state schools as a whole. Talk about misplaced priorities...

Geez, I'm not seeing anything absurd about the General Assembly solving what is a very real problem for state universities. And Beancounter didn't say that such legislation should be a priority over funding the universities.

Personally, I don't think the idea is very workable because of the strength of the U.Va. and Va. Tech lobbies, but I totally applaud him for thinking of solutions and floating an idea I'd not thought of!

This was at least a very real threat a few years back in NC, when they were trying to force UNC-CHeat and NCSU to play East Carolina every year in football. NCSU and UNC-CHeat both agreed to some futures series in order to avoid any sort of mandatory requirement.

Not having control over your schedule is difficult for a number of reasons, including recruiting, budget (pay-to-play slots now gone), being able to set up marquee games against non-conference teams in an effort to put yourself in the best position for bowl games/NCAA post-season play.

While certainly more doable in basketball/baseball than it is in football, there's a lot of backlash. Not to mention NCSU/UNC-CHeat fans didn't like that it was a lose-lose in their eyes. You beat East Carolina and people go "Ummm, congrats, I guess? You beat a team that has finished a season ranked only twice in over 80 years of playing football." You lose to East Carolina and people go "what the heck is up with that? That's terrible."

Interesting. I wonder if it's in the state's best interest to act on behalf of a few flagship athletic programs that could become nationally recognizable or to level the playing field for all the programs in the state.

Depends what the goals are for the state. I'd imagine they'd want both with a slight preference towards the flagship programs. Argument being that rising tide lifts all boats? You establish a flagship program and it raises the level of competition against peer schools? Who knows.

Side note, but the goal also may vary by state. This may sound dumb, but Virginia is in a good situation where both P5 FBS programs are tied to the state by name. (Virginia Tech, Univ. of Virginia). States like South Carolina or New Jersey aren't so lucky.

The state does not fund the Men BB programs so cannot dictate who the schools play, best the state can do is the Governor's Cup which stopped after a couple of years. Real world has this as a none starter..

Agree that this doesn't fly in the real world, but the state can tell state institutions to do--or not do--anything it pleases.

16-17 Men's Basketball Schedule
Undefeated Rhody beat ranked Cincy to earn the matchup with Duke tomorrow in the Hall of Fame Tip-off championship. Interesting scouting opportunity. Rhode Island is very good.

Scary observation: Bob Hurley Sr and VP Mike Spence look like twins.

RE: 16-17 Men's Basketball Schedule
.
A couple CAA NOTES from the past week, for your perusal:

CAA FACING NATIONAL POWERS: College of Charleston and William & Mary will battle two of the nation’s top programs on Wednesday as the Cougars visit #2 Villanova and the Tribe travels to #6 Duke. Both games will be nationally televised with CofC/Villanova airing on FS1 and W&M/Duke airing on ESPNU.
Also on this week’s non-conference schedule, Towson caps a four-game road trip at ACC foe Boston College on Tuesday, while Elon (NIU Thanksgiving Classic), Hofstra (Gulf Coast Showcase) and UNCW (Challenge In Music City) take part in tournaments.

CAA STARTS THE SEASON STRONG: It’s been a strong start (comparatively) to the season in CAA men’s basketball as the league’s 10 teams have combined for a 21-17 record.
UNCW is off to a 3-0 start for the second straight season after victories over Eastern Kentucky and ETSU last week. CofC started 3-0 for the first time since 2011-12 before falling to UCF and Wake Forest in the ESPN Gildan Charleston Classic. Northeastern (3-2) knocked off UConn, 64-61, last Monday night. It was NU’s first win over UConn since 1985.
Towson started 2-0 for the first time since 2013-14 and took #24 Maryland to the wire on Sunday before falling, 71-66. Delaware (3-3) got off to a 3-1 start for the first time since 2003-04 after getting past Miami (Ohio) last Friday. Elon picked up a 74-61 victory at USF last Thursday to improve to 2-1 and Drexel posted back-to-back wins over Hartford and North Texas last week. William & Mary is 2-1 with its only setback coming to #12 Louisville.

So far, not too bad...

The CAA championship game will air on CBS Sports Network, as was announced today. Looks like just a one-off deal. 3/6 at 7pm ET.

I certainly hope it's only a one time deal. Will any of the other tourney games be televised?

Lets hope a CAA team (or two) can get a couple of rounds into the tourney to make the conference a little more enticing to these networks.

That would probably take UNCW dropping almost no remaining games (probably a max of about 3 to upper-echelon teams and on the road) and losing in the title game of the CAA tourney. Then they'd have a good shot, I'd think. I think it helps that they had a good run in the early to mid 2000s and then had a good team last year. People can still recall when they were a strong squad, which will, hopefully, make an at-large feel less alien to them.

Disappointed with the news. But, since NBCSN has dropped the CAA, it might have been the best we could do. If you have DISH or Direct TV, you can get it, but with regular cable where I live, you don't have that channel. I am going to the tourney so it won't matter, but I cannot find that the first and second round games will be available in the Charleston area on cable. I was hoping to watch the Tribe session, but skip the other one. But if you don't have direct tv or dish at your hotel, there is no CSNMidAtlantic channel in the Charleston area that I can find. Perhaps it will be covered by a local channel since the tourney is in N. Charleston.

I guess I was hoping for an ESPN network going forward.

I'm only asking because I don't know: has UNCW beaten a quality opponent this season? I know they generally play a weak OOC schedule.

One Tribe. One Family.

A couple of decent teams (Tennessee State and St. Bonnie's, for instance), but mostly middle of the road or lower teams. They dropped their two against better competition (Middle Tennessee and Clemson).
