Knoxville News-Sentinel story says Gov. Haslam has said he doesn't want the job. Speculation season begins.

A dose of reality here.

The UT system and UTK in particular is not on great terms with the Tennessee Legislature. While individual legislators may applaud DiPietro's retirement, it will be a difficult hire. President of the UT system is not exactly a destination job in higher ed realms. Don't misinterpret me, it is an okay job, but then there is the issue of dealing with the political realities of a Republican super majority.

Just a bump and a reminder, UTK is more than an athletic department. This lack of support for Davenport will probably make it even more difficult to hire a quality Chancellor for UTK. Add to that the fact that the Chancellor will not know who their boss is to be if DiPietro follows through on retirement.

Of course could be more of a political appointment than a true search for a quality candidate...

Will Fulmer lobby for Noland?

Old news by now. Looks like 6 to 12 months to name a new chancellor.

RE: Could Noland be headed to UT?
Brent Hubbs was on 104.5 in Nashville this morning and said the Chancellor will be hired by the new President. They'll keep an interim in place until DiPietro retires, which is this coming year. Once the new President is installed (Haslam, Noland, Lamar, Corker, someone from Tennessee), then a chancellor will be hired by that president.
I'd be shocked if Dr. Noland isn't in contention for the President's job.

I've been waiting to say this, but "yes", if Noland wants the job, and Fulmer likes him (and we're pretty sure he does).
And yeah, if Noland wants it, he's just *got* to be a contender, one would think. That said...…..one must also think that if Haslam wants it, it's his to lose. At this point in life, I doubt Lamar would want to take that on. Corker? I could see that.

Just an update...… I suspect you all know this:

DiPietro leaving this fall (Altho not official 'til Feb. 2019)

The way I see it, the usual suspects are still in contention: Haslam, Corker, Noland, Lamar A., with the last one there being very unlikely, imo. And again, if Haslam wants it, he's got to be most likely. But I'm far from sure he'd really like to do that. He's still got the truck stop business to get back to.

If not for ETSU and similar institutions, the big boys would have to beat other bushes in order fill their various job openings. Will Fulmer lobby for Noland to join him in Knoxville?

I think the Haslams are in the process of selling to Berkshire Hathaway.

Randy Boyd named interim, and looks like the ut board is tipping its hand that they would like for him to be permanent.

Dr. Noland had found his home. I remain so happy he is our President.

Given the contemporary American cultural and political climate in numerous places, NE Tennessee and East Tennessee State University both look to be attractive alternatives in this day and time.
