RE: NMSU to go indy, looks at possible new oly sports conf
I don't think the Horizon would be any better for NMSU than the WAC.
More stable, yes, but in today's crazy world, I'm not sure any non FB conference is that stable. It would not likely be our final conference home. And travel would be even worse than the WAC. Recruiting for all sports except MBB (which I admit is key) would be destroyed. We recruit the western US almost exclusively for other sports.
IMO we might as well wait and see what happens instead of making an expensive move - and then still waiting to see what will happen.
Plus, I don't get why the Horizon would want a school some 1,600 miles away. Our BB is solid, but not tremendous.

The projected budget for FCS seems way light on Guarantee Money Games.
FCS schools are getting now closer to $400,000 for money games. Also, while NMSU would lose the home game revenue from UNM/UTEP, we would pick up probably just as much in the Money Game category for those games at UNM/UTEP, as those games would no longer be H/H. Several years ago UTEP offered NMSU close to $400,000 to play the game each year in EP. So the revenue side would be close to a million higher IMO.

Here is a post made by someone who is on the committee that is making the athletic recommendations. Here is what they found.

I found this to be interesting:
Quote:We all know that football must start winning this year. Admittedly, if Aggie football continues its chronic losing and cannot find a FBS conference home, FCS with all its impacts, would most likely become inevitable. Some bloggers have raised the possibility of a revised hybrid FBS level comprising some G5 and top-tier FCS teams, or a new WAC FBS league. These options are presently little more than blog talk. I doubt the former is considered seriously for 4-5 years until the big TV contracts are renegotiated. As for WAC FBS, it’s a long shot at best. There is talk about a possible opening in C-USA or a reconsideration by the Sun Belt if either gets raided. [/b]Staying FBS for at least four years keeps open these possibilities..

The Horizon league is way better than the WAC. Not sure what you are drinking right now.

From a stability standpoint the Horizon is a much better league. The WAC has been a shaky house of cards since the last exodus. I think the hard thing is that it doesn't pass the eyeball test. The rest of the league is a bus league focused with stops in Green Bay, Detroit, Milwaukee, Chicago, and Ohio. Unless someone else like UMKC and Denver are coming over you are going to look like an outlier
