RE: OT: sort of, BIG XII and Texas
Wasn't that long ago that the Big East was a power confernce and felt comfortable in their position. Look where they are now, oh yeah, you can't because they don't exist as the same league anymore.
OU president and Texas president disagree heavily in expansion. The BIG XII has had their fill of Texas ruling the roost. The majority will start forcing Texas to comply or they will move on. Texas has a choice to comply or to move on, but the current path isn't gonna last much longer.

You can't compare the Big East to the Big XII. Losing the schools they did actually has had no ill effects, but boosted their revenues. They sent seven to bowl games this year (not UT-Austin), seven to the NCAA tourney (garnering 16 units) and have a media deal that pays about $20 million a year per school.

The SEC and OU have flirted with each other in the past, I expect the love affair to blossom over the next couple years. OU is not attached to Texas, and would probably enjoy bailing on them if pushed.
I think you forgot that they were in the sw conf.. at the time a conference that was at the p5 level even tho the term had not yet been coined.
