RE: Add 2 to the B1G
The question NOBODY has answered yet, is if the B1G wanted UNC and UVA and UNC and UVA were truly so interested...why did they settle for Rutgers and Maryland?

B1G wants Kansas and Oklahoma more than Virginia and UNC. Last time they added Rutgers and Maryland for Penn State. This time they like to add Oklahoma and Kansas for Nebraska.

Virginia and North Carolina = 18 million people
Oklahoma and Kansas = 7 million people

They've got a cable network to sell.

Oklahoma and Kansas have the dominated fan base in their state, while there are more loyal Virginia Tech fans in Virginia. And state of North Carolina is divided by four with Duke and UNC equal on top. So I say it is a push from the perspective of population.

Duke is not on top... for football in the state of NC.
1 UNC
2 State
3 ECU
4 App
5 Duke
6 Wake
7 Charlotte

Duke makes more revenue from basketball than most schools make with their football program. Duke is a juggernaut.

New York City and Washington DC/Baltimore markets and their cable package/rights. That is the reason why the Big Ten chose Rutgers and paid Maryland big bucks to leave the ACC.

Rutgers....and Maryland. I get their markets and whatnot....but we're still talking Rutgers and Maryland. Either way, you missed the point. Why not take a swing after UNC and UVA while you're at it? Oh, because they weren't interested in leaving. That's right. In order for a conference to expand, the school has to be willing to join. Thus far, the only other school that has even ELUDED to MAYBE being interested in leaving was FSU and even they still signed on to the GOR.

1. Because North Carolina currently does not wish to be part of the Big Ten. If the ACC collapsed, UNC would seek the SEC.

2. Virginia wishes to be in a conference with UNC. UVA makes loads of revenue.

Until those schools are forced to consider alternatives, they are happy.

I think it is fun to speculate but I think state legislatures will have a say whether one school gets a golden ticket and the other gets left out in the cold.
Oklahoma - Oklahoma st., UVA - VaTech, Kansas-kansas st. Etc.

Which is my point whenever folks always say "the B1G will just take this school, and the SEC will take that school..."

Anyhow, ESPN will facilitate moves that'll help everyone out and balance their books...but wouldn't let the B1G poach a school from one of their conferences.

they didn't settle for them, they were targeted for the DMA in order to proliferate the BTN and seed the conference on the east coast.

NYC/NJ and DC are far and away the two most important media markets on the east coast, and NYC is the most important media market in the entire world.

The SEC isn't just going to sit back and let two AAU universities in contiguous southern states go to the Big Ten. If anything does happen with UNC, UVA, and Duke, it will be the SEC's move.

its not really SEC nor Big Ten's move - in the end its wherever those schools want to go.

B1G already were rumored to have standing invites to UVA, UNC, Duke, GT, Texas and ND. Its probably the same deal with the SEC outside of GT. Currently those schools are content where they are but if things blow up, they'll make their moves.

Not in Oklahoma. The State Legislature will not be a factor.

The two don't have to be together so long as they both land on their feet. That's the catch, and the PAC would constitute landing on one's feet. Texas isn't going to give a **** about saving Tech, however.

Sorry, but that is not exactly correct. You have to understand that in Oklahoma, both OU and OSU are ultimately governed by the same Board of Regents. The two schools have a long history of cooperation and they would like very much to stay together. However, as things now stand, if OU gets a great opportunity to go it alone, they will not be denied that opportunity. Even if OSU is left in the Big12 with any remaining schools.

Their board of regents is irrelevant. They would LIKE to very much stay together, but so long as they both end up in power conferences, they don't HAVE to stay together. And as you yourself have said, OSU may not even have to end up in a power conference at this point for Oklahoma to leave...though, I do still think OSU brings a lot to the table for a conference.

You keep saying that as long as both end up in P5 conferences they do not have to stay together. You say that is the catch

THERE IS NO CATCH. Please reread my post. What I am telling you is, they do not have to stay together period. It no longer matters where OSU ends up if OU leaves.

And the Board is relevant, because they are the ones clearing the way for OU to leave, even if OSU does not land on their feet, as you say, in another P5 conference..

I agreed with your point, so CLEARLY you didn't read my post. I simply said I think they both WILL end up in a P5. I get that there's seemingly no longer a catch.

I am far more partial to the SEC than B1G, but UNC, UVA, and Duke would all much prefer to be B1G members than SEC members, despite their location in Dixie.

It's hilarious how UofL fans try to diminish Maryland. Maybe it's because you only got your ACC slot after they got promoted from the ACC to the B1G?

Maryland is the flagship of the richest state in the USA, and is a two-hour *walk* from the White House. Very good academics, and football and basketball teams with long legacies. Far superior to UofL.

Maryland isn't a "settle" for anyone, which is why they have always been in a power league. 07-coffee3

I understand that you think they both will end up in a P5. However, I hope you will excuse my lack of reading skills, but I could not get it out of my head what you said in your first post....."the two (OU and OSU) don't have to stay together so long as they both land on their feet. That's the catch, and the PAC would constitute landing on one's feet"

Then in you second post you said...."so long as they both end up in power conferences they don't have to stay together''.

Some how I interpreted that to mean you were saying they both had to land in P5 conferences if they seperated.

That is why I responded that the way things now stand it no longer matters whether OSU lands in a Power conference or not, they do not have to stay together even if OSU gets left out of P5.

I am sorry that I misread your posts and I am glad glad we finally agree on this and you get that there is no catch.
