Yes. It means you need to pony up the money and join the rest of the conference.

That's quite a bit of money considering we currently do not have a softball facility of any sort.

I think it will happen eventually because softball is really popular in this area, but it's going to take Title IX forcing us to add scholarships (Which probably will happen soon anyway) to get the ball rolling.

The Red Wolves might be able to use something like the Southside Softball Complex at least as a temporary home. It's 4-5 miles due south of the campus according to Google maps. Lamar did something like that until the on-campus stadium was built last year. Lamar's temporary home was 8 miles from campus. The good news is that it was all interstate grade highways between the two so travel time was only 8 minutes except during high traffic periods.

I don't know what the seating capacities are at Southside. The field Lamar used at Ford Park had seating for 400-500. Lamar worked out a deal with the county to have exclusive use of one of the twelve softball fields. The university made minor modifications to put that field to NCAA standards.

The sport has been well received since bringing it back with attendance close to and over capacity several times this season. We really enjoyed the games we were able to see making the drive over from Houston. It's a good, fast moving sport and fun to watch.

Heck yeah, UTSA still uses a Little League field for baseball. Oh wait, that is their on campus ballpark. My bad.

We use Southside for our Club team currently, but it's not capable of hosting a Sun Belt level team. The most common thought seems to be to convert our existing baseball stadium into softball, and to build a new baseball stadium just to the South of that.

That's going to require several million dollars though, and several generous donations.

TXST takes first 2 from UTA (2-0,6-3) to go 14-9 (35-18). Have now won 9 straight conference games and 10 of last 11 (in conf). Guaranteed a top 4 seed.

Slight improvement over last season where they won 32 games.

Texas State is the only team left that can catch South Alabama for the #2 seed, and they must finish the job with Texas-Arlington and hope Troy can sweep the Jaguars. The Bobcats lose the tiebreak to both Georgia schools, so they will be #4 if they lose to UTA and one of the Georgia teams sweeps on Saturday.

It's a boggling scenario.

RE: Softball standings and conference tournament
Scenarios if we sweep UTA

They are currently 35-18(14-9) and can be seeded no lower than 4th in the tournament. GS/GSU both stand at 12-10 with 2 games left. They are playing each other. GSU won today but if one of them doesn't sweep we get 3rd. (One could end up 14-10, the other 12-12 or 13-11, 13-11). Now, if Troy can pull off a sweep of USA we could possibly be 2nd (USA sits at 14-6 and we hold the tiebreak); if Troy and us both sweep.
USA being swept would leave them at 14-9 and us at 15-9 (with sweep). They had a game rained out. All would be moot if USA takes just 1 game.

Ok, that's enough. It's very confusing. I hate when this comes down to the last games of the season.

I mean, how many times has GS played GSU in anything? Yeah, we have UTA/TXST but our rivalry trophy (excluding football) is with UTSA and UTA has one (a rivalry) with UNT. I assume, next year, they'll add App/CCU to it. How many times have they played? It's just something conferences do.

Not a major thing. Just a bit of fun for the SBC to pretend are.

Yep, I agree with all that. It's just I was going through the consultants report and was glad to see our lack of a rivalry was listed there: a lot of us have been bemoaning the lack of one, and hope we can rectify this. So seeing a rivalry listed in this thread stuck out for me.

I guess the biggest question I have is how does a school go about creating....or even encouraging....a rivalry? The S. Alabama MBB game in the dome this year was a great example of how exciting a good rivalry can be. Maybe that will continue to grow and catch on?

You don't create rivalries. They create themselves.

Who would have thought Western Kentucky would join UNO as our biggest basketball rival when we were together.

The UL South Alabama baseball rivalry created itself and is as big a rivalry as there is in this league in any sport.

To have a rival, you 1) have to play regularly, 2) and both teams need to win enough games to make it real. Geography certainly helps, but it's not mandatory.

Well USA beat Troy in game one. 17 of the 21 outs were Devin Brown strikeouts.

Texas State sweeps to end regular season at 36-18 (15-9). Will go into Mobile as 3rd seed.

Rupp ends the season at 26-10 with 293 Ks, 1.59 ERA.

Sucks for 3 & 4 seeds; especially since we swept the 2 seed.

My apologies, I messed up. Games 1 & 2 are single elimination, losers of Games 3 & 4 go to the loser's bracket on Thursday.

UTA could theoretically draw TXST again. Geezus, why are we always in the same bracket no matter the sport when it comes to the conference tourney?

In fact, we recently hired an external company to perform an assessment on the status of our athletic program, and not having a rival was very high on their list of concerns.

The list did not have many surprises for Louisiana fans, but most of us were encouraged that the current admin even paid for the study.......and that they will eventually take steps to get us where we should be.

Our real rivalry is LaTech, ULM is just a in-state school, that so happens to be in the same conference.

What we learned is spot on, we need to come up with a crawfish, or gator or something.

I hadn't realized that last weeks Bracketology predication's actually had TXST making a Regional. Three SBC bids. Will be interesting to see if that holds when the new one comes out today.
