Who has staying power?
David Bowie and the Eagles (Glen Frey) had over 40 years of relevance, Prince over 30 years. All of them still had the ability to fill venues and be considered A-listers until their deaths. That says nothing of the Stones and Paul McCartney when they go, over 50 years of elite status.

I was wondering... What musician that has emerged in the, say, past 10 years do you feel will be a superstar and still relevant 30-40 years from now?

I'm sure there will be some, but it feels like we've entered an age of more flash in the pan and one hit wonder types, especially in the age of MP3 singles and less emphasis on full album works, as opposed to versatile artists with generational staying power.

I suppose the likes of Adele, Justin Timberlake, and Lady Gaga will still be headlining shows through the next decade. But what about in the year 2046?

And to that end, what "rockers" nowadays have the best potential?

DAMN... good convo....

Hmmm, for the mega success they have had.... Metallica would come to mind.

You'd have to put Madonna up there....

RE: Who has staying power?
I know the question you are actually asking, and it is a tough one to answer, as much because the nature of the music business model that built a lot of those type of atists has changed so much, as well as the general landscape of things.

Still, for the artists that are getting long in the tooth, I'd say U2 (although they've grown stale the last few albums). R.E.M. had it for quite a while but faded badly in the end, then disbanded.

I'd have bet you could out INXS in there before Hutchence died and cut them short (although JD Fortune's contribution wasn't too bad.) Brief personal trivia: I auditioned for them when the Rockstar show came along; that was a trip.

Anyhoo, I'd say Beck has been the style that might sustain long term respect, though like Prince, he's pretty obscure now, though still good. Radiohead, but they just lost me with KidA and everything afterwards, though many still dig their stuff.

If you ever get a chance to go see Susanna Hoffs (from the Bangles) on one of her small solo tours, I guarantee you won;t be disappointed with her new material. It holds up great; she's still quite beautiful, especially for a 50-something mom, and she can still write and sing excellent original material!

Is Sting even still around? He'd be one, I guess.

From the alternative world, I still like Richard Butler from The Psychedelic Furs and Love Spit Love, and Depeche Mode would have to be in the conversation. Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits had several good solo albums to go along with his old band's work. Robert Smith is till out there somewhere. The Cure had a lot of good stuff. Even Duran Duran has surprised and lasted this long, with new material no less.

Barry Gibb is still kicking around after all these years doing some solo stuff. Whatever you might say about them, he and his brothers were excellent songwriters that were prolific and wrote many standards.

I think Stephin Merritt is an excellent songwriter, and very prolific in his many different projects and side projects. He certainly has the raw talent if he keeps writing. I would also have definitely added Scott Miller as an unheralded genius before he committed suicide. An absolutely amazing catalog of work with his two bands over thirty years' time, and few know about who he was, which is a damn shame.

Billy Idol, maybe? Don't know that he's put out anything original in a while, though.

Sheryl Crow has the catalog and songwriting chops. Chris Isaak as well.

Those would be some of my guesses. As far as the artists that came along more recently, I guess Lady Gaga, because she's actually a classically trained and talented person, and knows how to construct songs, collaborate and perform.

Those would be some of my guesses.

RE: Who has staying power?
This guy would be my pick, a grossly underappreciated and mostly unknown musical genius, as prolific as Prince and detailed to a fault, but unfortunately he committed suicide in 2013.

Still, his 30 years of work deserves attention as he influenced many musicians who actually understood music and songcraft.

I understand his back catalogue has finally been reissued. Musical friends famous and obscure have taken some of the remains of unfinished works he left behind and produced a final album at Abbey Road Studios.

Scott Miller(the other one, who's dead) (April 4, 1960 – April 15, 2013)

I will always miss hearing more from his self-described "miserable whine."

Artist: Game Theory
Album: The Big Shot Chronicles
Cut: "Like A Girl Jesus"
1986 Enigma Records

Spin Magazine likened The Big Shot Chronicles to Real Nighttime, calling both albums "a rare commodity... a pop record that can actually make you laugh and cry and squirm all at once." The Big Shot Chronicles was distinguished as "harsh, dense, and metallic-sounding," and "damned ambitious as pop fare goes nowadays, with difficult time signatures, criss-cross rhythms, off-beat chordings, and surreal, vertiginous lyrics."

only 39 views on Youtube. What a flippin' crime.

Have the original CD and the original Vinyl.
This album kicks Sgt. Peppers' A$$.
There are not enough superlatives...
Brilliant double album that should have been a triple...

Artist: Game Theory
Album: Lolita Nation
Cut: "One More For Saint Michael"
December 1, 1987 Enigma Records

"Tell him Jim, tell him Jim, tell him Jim, tell him Jim...
Michael you don't know the half of the mess
getting laid down at your favorite address...
Who's that little pile of smiles? get away, thank you
I don't need a tax audit--haven't made one half a dollar all year
have I made it real clear who does not need Company here...
Pee sprays down his knee, I know kids about three more impressive than me..
God only knows how many holes he's been in...
Reeling wild from the stern to the bow, praying to thou,
I know why they call a Starship 'she' now...
Up jump an eager pup say put in, put in, put in, put in, put in, put in, put in, put in a good word for me"

Artist: Game Theory
Album: Lolita Nation
Cut: "Last Day That We're Young"
December 1, 1987 Enigma Records

"Shakes all the sheathing loose from the wire
Time's gonna be a luxury, oh, in the Responsibility Empire...
Hang up the faces, Lon Chaney, your day is gone
'cause each one is one last chance you can win
no one can get behind that they all say it's so
you lose before you begin
What was it we were always wanting?
Didn't we know we had it all?
Show me some teary-eyed beauty that disappears
every time I might happen along
Open the sky and tell me the day when it comes
I'll have been proven wrong...
So give me some false hope I can take seriously"

My goodness, the guy was s flippin' genius

and then, more than a decade later,
there was this...masterpiece...

"Girl being close hurts
so I've called from the outskirts
With road noise from a phone booth
so we won't hear the whole TRUTH
Bought this house on a low bid
where they moved up like WE DID
Where the NEEDS OF THE RENTER
PULLED US FAR FROM THE CENTER...
Sister sleep now kiss us on the mouth
IT'S ALL WE EVER WANT FROM HER"

Album: Days For Days

Their original albums sell online for sometimes hundreds of dollars. I have the whole catalog of original recordings and you couldn't pay me enough to part with any of them. If there was only one band's work I would be allowed to listen to, if it had to be a rock band, I would pick TLF/GT. The old Game Theory albums are stellar. You have to get them and listen to them on a proper hi-fi and turn it up to 11 and 1/2!

Artist: The Loud Family
Album: Plants and Birds and Rocks and Things
Cut: "Jimmy Still Comes Around"
1993 Alias Records

P&B&R&T was produced by Mitch Easter, who also produced R.E.M.'s Murmer and reckoning albums. I asked Mitch one time why P&B&R&T had so many freakin' great songs on it, and he said, well, Scott had a few years between bands and had a lot of good songs saved up, plus he was incredibly prolific anyway, and was a musical genius. I had to agree with him. When he told me what he charged I couldn't believe it--I told him he was hiring himself out way too cheaply. He laughed at that one!

"...and I saw real estate that I would not call land
...You're smart enough to make the numbers appear
the way the shouts around the table want to hear"

Artist: The Loud Family
Album: Plants and Birds and Rocks and Things
Cut: "Idiot Son"
1993 Alias Records

Artist: Game Theory
Album: Real Nighttime
Cut: "Friend of the Family" (the song Scott would later name TLF after)
1985 Enigma Records

Artist: Game Theory
Album: The Big Shot Chronicles
Cut: "I've Tried Subtlety Before (but I will not anymore)"
1986 Enigma Records, Alias Records

I met Scott once after a show. He was the nicest guy. Signed my albums and said a few kind words. He was the best! They're finally working on a proper documentary on the guy, too late. We'll miss you, Scott.

RE: Who has staying power?
I think some of you are misunderstanding the question, which is a really good one: Musicians who have emerged in the last 10 years who will be relevant in 30+ years. I think the safest bets are performers like Adele and Gaga, but I think their relevance is as likely to be due to Vegas style contracts (a la Britney, Celine) as the nature of their music. Drake, Kanye? And rock/alt rock/indy rock? No clue - there's lots of good music but nothing that strikes me as sustainable for that long. 10 years ago I would have said White Stripes, but, you know...

Honestly, after thinking about this for a while I'm wondering if the nature of the music business as it now exists makes it nearly impossible for someone other than a solo act to really attain the kind of staying power described in the OP. Online digital access to nearly everything, independent production and promotion. It seems like that could make a band much less likely to build the kind of following and/or have the incentive to stay together for decades. No record labels to hold everything together.

03-yes

The rest of your post is on the mark, as I'm not sure if we'll see future "legends" made from musicians entering the industry now (or recently). I think, say, post 2005, the real life span of a singer or group is more limited, partially driven by the digital revolution. Then again, being in the moment, it's hard to tell who might break through.

In addition to being a good performer and filling venues, it feels like you need the following qualities to be relevant for decades:
1) Eccentric, odd or mysterious personal life/personality
2) Ability to "reinvent" yourself every 4-5 years with a new style (or schtick)
3) Some level of anti-establishment or rebelliousness nature

Musicians including every Beatles member, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, Freddie Mercury, Bowie, Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack, Elvis, James Brown... they fit these attributes.

It's why I don't think Adele, as talented as she is, has much of a shot to really have that power for decades. Same for someone like Carrie Underwood. She'll be successful for years to come, but won't ever be stop-the-presses legend status because she fails all 3 attributes.

Lady Gaga is a candidate for some serious longevity if she plays her cards right. Great pipes, accomplished musician, strange, ability to change styles without a missing a beat, etc.

RE: Who has staying power?
thanks for the game theory intro! good sh!t. since i don't own a tv or listen to fm (outside of npr) radio, i'm blissfully unaware of popular contemporary music. i couldn't peg a guess, but i would imagine taylor swift might be relevant years from now. i did dig this tune

Taylor Swift is my guess. That is, if she doesn't stop doing music and start an acting career or something like that. People seem to be crazy for Beyonce too but she started prior to the "10 years ago" threshold.
