It really benefits the Moos the most of other SEC schools by playing UAB in Birmingham.

Considering that the Ole Miss game probably won't happen for somewhat obvious reasons.

Tubby Smith has reached an agreement in principle to be Memphis' next coach, a source told @CBSSports. Formal announcement expected soon.
4:56 AM - 14 Apr 2016

Are the Memphis fans happy with this selection? Tubby is 64 years old, soon to be 65.

Could they be setting the stage for Penny Hardaway as the "coach-in-waiting" ?

Tubby is the anti-Pastner. He has a solid record of accomplishment everywhere he has gone. He might not have been the first choice, but I think the majority of Memphis fans are ok with it.

I've heard nothing to indicate they are. Seriously, I follow college basketball a lot, and I almost forgot he was at Texas tech. His style is boring and outdated. i don't understand the hire at all.

MT.org seems to be at least resigned to it, if not enthusiastic. As to the 3.1, TTech offered him a raise to 2.8. Memphis had a choice of offering more or looking somewhere between halfassed and cheap. If Tubby was really the guy they wanted they pretty much HAD to offer more.

I'm not saying they were enthusiastic about it. Frankly, if it were me, I'd have waited for the NBA season to be over and waited to see what happened with coaching staffs there. Their first two choices wanted much more and had big buyouts to boot.

Yep. They got backed into paying more than they wanted to.

It makes the way Ingram went through the process not look quite as bad now.

Memphis had a committee of 9 people. According to Gary Parrish, who has some sources inside Memphis, said that Tubby was not the choice of everyone on the committee. However, he had the votes of those who counted.

No, he's correct. The message board poll has it as:

homerun hire--6.13%
good hire--41.72%
we'll see--19.02%
could have done better--19.63%
horrible--10.43%
I'd rather still have Pastner--3.07%

I think that translates into most Memphis fans are ok with it.

If I do my math right, slightly less than 49% think it is a good hire or homerun hire. Over 51% have doubts (We'll see or could have done better) or think it is a bad hire.

I think the biggest complaint isn't with Tubby himself, but the fact that you guys got took to the cleaners again.

I'm happy. If Tubby can keep Memphis kids home we'll be just fine. In fact, I'm willing to bet he'll make the second weekend 2-3 times in his tenure here which would thrill most Memphis fans after JP's tenure.

no, year one we pay him 2.8 million...year two 2.9 million...years 3-5, 3.25 million.

I'd MUCH rather have Tubby Smith for 2.8-2.9 million...than Josh Pastner for 2.65

we can revisit the contract in 2018-19 when the price jumps up over 3 million..
