That's too bad. I think Jake's pride is getting his way. After the Cy Young year, Chicago offered him a reasonable extension (think it was 5 years) and Boras infamously said, "aces get seven years." He's really good, but he's not Kershaw or Scherzer.
Loved watching him pitch the past four years. He was absolutely fantastic for 2.5 of those years, and he delivered in the World Series too. Sentimentally, I would rather have Jake and I think his ceiling is higher than Yu's. He lost his command the last year and wasn't the same guy. I hoped that the market would play out where he'd take a prove-it, two-year deal in Chicago, with a player option after one year. I wanted to see what disrespected Jake could do, but I think Chicago made a good decision.
I think he's going to be treading tough waters, as it's a "what have you done for me lately" world. We both know he regressed a bit last year. For the same reason Tanaka didn't opt out. I'll be interested to see where he lands.

ERA's are going up across the bigs. What I focus on is his 1,021 career K's and just 307 walks (3.33:1 ratio). Kershaw's is 4.18:1, for comparison purposes.

K's can be misleading two. Michael Pineda's K vs walk was insane but if you K two in an inning and give up 4 runs it doesn't much matter. Pineda had 4.35 K's for every walk.

RE: 2016 and 2017 MLB Thread
Darvish contract appears to be structured to keep him around, rather than encourage him to opt out after 2019.
$126 million contract: $25 million in 2018; $20M in 2019; $22M in 2020; $22 M in 2021; $19 million in 2022 and $18 million in 2023 He also has full no trade clause in first four years of deal.

JD to the Sawx, a pure case of trying to keep up with the Jones's. Honestly though i don't think it's a horrible contract

Congrats to Jake Arrieta and the Phillies. I'll be pulling for Jake with few exceptions. I don't expect 2015-2016 Jake any more, but whatever he has left in the tank, he'll give it is all. A true competitor!

I like that signing. They have a young staff, people underestimate the benefit of having a vet like him around the youngsters

I don't the Phillies system well, but the signing reminds me of Chicago signing Lester. The rebuild is over boys; let's go compete.

CC may have been up/down in terms of his stats, but having him around all the Yankee young arms has been priceless

2016 and 2017 MLB Thread
Welcome to Opening Day y’all!
In significant Cubs news, Ian Happ just drilled the first pitch of the Cubs’ season into the seats!
Through the first few guys in the lineup you can already see a changed approach via a new hitting coach in Chile Davis.

Defense failed Lester today. Despite being the opening day starter, he's our #3-4 starter. I'm not worried about him yet/
1-0 for now, only 103 or more wins on the year will do.

Man, the Cubs sure look sluggish out of the gate. Hopefully the bats wake up soon.
