RE: Welcome Coach Spiker!
I hear and agree with you both, but I've gone back and forth with a guy on the SJU boards (I've mentioned him on the Zone before, especially regarding Miles sitting out all of this past year) and that is not how Spiker's hire is being received.

Quote:Every hire will be scrutinized going forward... To Drexel's credit, they did have Bru for 15 years... He did win more than he lost and he graduated every 4 year player...
Philly has a long tradition... In Philly guys wait their turn and put in their time, then they get a shot... Look at the history... Eddie Burke, Lefty Ervin, Jim Boyle, Speedy Morris (no degree), Phil Martelli, Fran Dunphy... All these were Philly guys that waited and were given a fair shot at the Head job...
Now, the head of line is filled with Horace Owens, Ashley Howard, Geoff Arnold, Mark Bass, Dwayne Killings, AAron Mckie... We have NEW RULES!!
Now, instead of honoring the long standing traditions in Philly, we use search firms... The search firms have "double secret" formulas... Search firms can take a losing coach and once they evaluate him, he becomes a winner...
End result... 9 Head Coaching jobs... 0 Black coaches...
I don't expect most on this board to understand... But I have spoken to or received messages from literally hundreds of coaches and players across the country that do understand...
0 for 9... in a city where 90% or more of the elite players are from one demographic...

Now... Having said all that... I respect Drexel's decision... They did what they felt was best for Drexel... The local scholastic/AAU/grassroots community is galvanizing to do want they feel is best for the local scholastic/AAU/grassroots community...
It's just business... Not personal

And on the news of Terrell's transfer:
Quote:The streets are TALKIN!!!
GREAT news!!

So, you know, welcome to the City of Brotherly Love. Personally, I'm hoping since Army tends to recruit nationally, Coach Spiker has contacts all over the US and losing out on local talent (which, let's be honest, we weren't really pulling in even with Bru as our coach) won't hinder us too much. I'm sure if we could become successful, relations would thaw.

RE: Welcome Coach Spiker!
That quote is exactly my point. It is an agenda by them and Philly for no reason. Are recruits leaving Philly because they can't play for a black coach? No, they are not. You said so yourself, it isn't like we have been getting these players with a Philly connection. I really just think they are off base on this. From a city that doesn't even count Drexel as part of the city schools, why should they feel entitled to jump in when convenient to say we should be playing by "philadelphia tradition" rules? Can't have it both ways. An aside, so search firms give a broader scope and more options yet because the schools decided the best men for their respective jobs were white, that means the search firms were biased in forming the group interviewed? GTFO with that mentality (not directed at you Drachen).

FWIW very few people are getting coaching gigs at this level without "paying their dues". Spiker paid his, just not in Philly. Not sure why they have a problem with that, other than shear arrogance.

One thing he has to learn quickly is that we are "the City 6". In a Comcast article he said he will entice recruits to Drexel by talking about the city and the big 5. It a small thing but still haha.

Why? Philadelphia does not look at it like that especially in the media. It is the Big 5 and Drexel, when convenient. We are already basically ignored in the city, so I do not see how this is a big deal other than it doesnt fit their own agenda. They want their cake and to eat it too. Drexel only matters to them when we are convenient to their agenda, it is as simple as that. I also seriously doubt the reason Terrell is transferring had to do with the skin color of our head coach. They are trying to make an issue out of something that is not an issue (mountain out of a mole hill analogy).

I don't like when we get left out of the conversation/Drexel isn't apart of the city and I know I am not the only one. Terrell left because he wants to play for a major school and doesn't want at most 12-15 wins.

Don't know if you guys discussed this on these boards. But did DU give any consideration to Bashir Mason at Wagner?

Or is he too much a Bruiser guy and they wanted to go a completely different direction as far as a coaching style?

I believe he has an interview but either Spiker did amazing during the interview or they just wanted to have a clean slate.

He was interviewed for sure. I do believe they wanted to go in a completely different route away from the Bruiser tree, even if Bash's style is different than Bruiser's.

I'm not a twitter reply guy, so I'll comment here. DragonsSpeak tweeted concern over the publicity tour that Spiker is on right now, which is a couple interiews at Comcast over the last couple days. I dont find this to be a problem. Yeah, he has big work to be doing right now and I agree with the "Next Steps" blog post, but can still be out generating some positive publicity for the school/program. If anything, I'm pleased that he's doing the publicity stuff, especially if he's taking care of the back office stuff as well. With his energy, work ethic and molding at the USMA, I'm sure he's working behind the scenes also to get recruiting efforts underway, build a staff and rally the returning players, etc.

I'm looking forward to the change. Goal = Win the CAA and dance.

I agree that I think it's a good thing to do this media tour now. Give college basketball fans in the city a chance to get to know him now, while college basketball is still fresh on people's minds, and there's something else to talk about. Then they head to Houston for the FF, and then get down to business as soon as they return.

Here's a clip from his appearance on Breakfast on Broad.
https://www.facebook.com/bobontcn/videos...790000717/

It's over 7 minutes but not really much substance about Drexel and what the plans are there though more talking about Philadelphia and the final four.

One thing of note a little over a minute in, the host refers to Drexel as a "storied program". Even as a long time fan, I'm not sure that is a description I'd use given our position in the city and the NCAA as a whole.

RE: Welcome Coach Spiker!
Definitely interesting that he has been doing quite a few tv shows or radio shows since being hired. Hopefully that means he has firgured the rest of his staff out and is now getting out there and recruiting. I would think that would be more of a priority than going on a few radio shows, even though the exposure for our program is a good thing.
