RE: Best college town in the south
I think Athens may be the coolest college town I have ever been to and I have been to many. It's very unique. If you like to people watch it's a great place as there are all types and it's very artsy. Bars, pubs, and restaurants all over the place. It is also getting nicer as many of the Atlanta folks are building and or moving there and commuting.

Auburn is another very nice college towns and I believe has been voted on several magazines as one of the best places to live in America. Over the last 15 years they have done an incredible job with thier development. Very nice town.

You need to get out more. I been to Athens probably 5-7 times over the last decade and not impressed with anything. I liked Elon more than Athens from my time in the Army and at GS.

RE: Best college town in the south
I've only been to Athens for football-related reasons for the past several years, so my impression at this point is that it's filled with aholes. During my undergrad years in Macon, though, Athens was a frequent destination for the live music I wanted to see. I spent many a great hour at the 40 Watt. I have a feeling that if I went there now, I'd just feel like I was surrounded by a bunch of annoying hipsters, but I don't doubt that if I was a college kid looking for an interesting scene, it could still fit the bill pretty easily.

I go to Athens 5-7 time a year, mainly to see concerts. The 'new' GA Theater is the best music venue in the state and I can't be convinced otherwise. The 40 watt is a legendary shithole. Plenty of good food and drink around and it's located in beautiful east Georgia. That's worth it alone for me...

They say Mexican food is generally pretty bad outside of the Southwest, I wonder if the same goes for margaritas?

Not the best margaritas in the world but they get you there fast and cheap. A couple Watermelon Margs and a few hours in the Statesboro sun and you'll be stumbling back to your bed (or someone else's)

I dont know how this became a thread about Athens, but i will add this, since i was there a few months ago.

They have Creature Comforts Brewing, that alone means they are a pretty good town.

San Marcos is still the best though.
