ESPN ranks the G5 Football jobs
It's an insider piece, so you'd need a subscription to read it all. Here's the gist though.
21. Arkansas State
Comment: Lack of talent in Arkansas forces school to recruit almost entirely out of state, but that weakness is made up for in building new facilities.
24. UL-Lafayette:
Comment: Should be best program in SBC with the talent in the area combined with facilities and a hungry fan base
27. Georgia Southern:
Comment: School to watch. Access to a lot of available talent, and program has a history of winning and it's own identity that is uniquely it's own
29. Appalachian State
Comment: Much like Georgia Southern, but without the available area talent to recruit from. Rabid fan base
36. Troy
Comment: After period of success, school watched others pass it by. Now realizes that it has to keep up with other G5 schools and not remain stagnant
44 Texas State
Comment: Mid Tier SBC job. San Marcos isn't much to write home about, but program has potential to rise with access to Houston and San Antonio recruiting markets.
49. South Alabama:
Comment: Other G5 coaches agree that these guys can and should be better than Troy, but their lack of investment is holding them back. Need an on campus stadium.
55. Georgia State
Comment: Access to Atlanta talent is great, but other coaches are concerned with their lack of facilities and fan support.
56. UL-Monroe
Comment: Budget is a big drawback. Located in talent rich state, but financial situation in Louisiana has left ULM with a murky future.
62. Idaho
Comment: Geographical outlier not withstanding, Idaho is on their own. They don't have the facilities (despite the glory that is the Kibbie Dome) to compete with the MWC. They should probably drop to FCS
64. NMSU (Dead Last)
Comment: College Football Siberia. No money, no talent in state to recruit, no fan support, and no investment in faculties. Almost impossible to win there.
If we're curious, most of the top 20 is AAC and MWC schools. Only Marshall and Southern Miss made it from CUSA, along with NIU and Bowling Green from the MAC.
Notables
Marshall 10
Southern Miss 15
Louisiana Tech 23
Western KY 26
UNT 32
MTSU 33
Tulane 34
FAU 40
FIU 54

RE: ESPN ranks the G5 Football jobs
Thanks for posting, this article got mentioned on our board, but whoever brought it up didn't have inSider access to actually describe it, just mentioned the headline. Would you mind posting the Top 10, with or without comments as you have time for.
Nevermind, the thread on GSUfans got updated with the kind of info I was asking for, others can see it here if they like:

Georgia Southern the 27th and Appalachian State the 29th best G5 programs....OK.
Didn't both of those schools in their first full seasons of FBS ball win bowl games and post very good records? I'd say that would put you in the Top 15 at the very least.
Ohio is rated the 38th best football school and Marshall 10th. Ohio's won 4 out of 5 against Marshall and played in 7 bowl games in the last 10 years. They rated Miami 35th when Ohio has beat them 9 times of 10.
The rankings are pure crap.

It's the best job, not the best team. Resources, salary, budgets, facilities, fan support and recruiting grounds. It's says nothing about ranking football schools...this is if you were a coach looking for a job this is how you would rank them.

North Texas is #32 while Fresno State is #37? Give me a break.
Fresno State regardless of a few weak seasons lately is one of the strongest programs in the MWC.
Air Force #30? That is silly with their tradition. They should be ranked up there with Navy.

You are confusing best job with best program.
AFA isn't a great JOB because the academic requirements limit who you can look at and the post-graduation commitment further reduces interested recruits. You are locked in on 10 games per year (8 MWC, Navy, Army) so don't have a lot of non-conference flexibility.

I think Georgia Southern and App are both 'upstarts' in terms of FBS success. We've both had dream starts but it remains to be seen of we can maintain this success over the long term.
I think both can but it still has to be proven.

Still look at AFA's tradition and 50,000 seat stadium. That gives you an edge against the average G5 program. Granted not everyone is academy material but enough good football players nationally are. Navy is ranked #13 with the same limitations and over a 20 year period about the same level of success. Both Colorado Springs and Annapolis are nice places to go to college.
Schools that should be at the bottom of the rankings are coaching graveyards. Mostly you do see graveyards represented at the bottom and SMU should be among them which is rated the #12 job. Its a rich kid school that doesn't attract the blue collar Texas player.

Nay and AF have not had the same level of success over the last 10 years and recruiting wise Navy was #87 with 10 3 stars. AF was #110 with 4 3 stars. As far as tradition and prestige Navy trumps AF any day of the week.

I can't believe we're not last, especially in any article published before March 10th.
