Benson does turn 65 in December. My guess it is to announce his impending retirement and the formation of a search committee.

I refuse to get my hopes up for any of this. My money would be on a Benson retirement announcement -- big enough for a teleconference, small enough to keep a secret. If it's good news on Idaho/NMSU I doubt people at all the involved schools would be so tight-lipped about it.

But I hope I'm wrong.

Probably wise. Retirement seems more likely than going off script on membership.

-It won't be announcement of a member departure to another conference. Those decisions are announced at the school by school level.

-The decision on what to do with Idaho and New Mexico St won't be made for another 9 days so its not going to be that.

-Benson's retirement announcement wouldn't delay the football schedule. In fact you'd want to wait until after the Idaho/New Mexico State decision for another SBC press day.

Its most likely something major on the SBC TV front. That why Benson is announcing with a league president.

If it were his retirement then that other lady is likely being named interim, which would require her to be there.

Football schedule was bumped for other reasons.

That other lady is the President of Texas State I believe, I'm not well versed in how these things work, but I highly doubt a university president would step in as interim conference commissioner if Benson was leaving.

If it is a retirement announcement, there is no reason to name an interim unless there is a dire health or family issue.

Idaho and NMSU is the most logical result but I can't see the need to have a teleconference or the league president involved unless the terms are changing and Idaho and NMSU are taken off the contract model and moved to a "permanent" status where they are in unless they withdraw or are expelled and expulsion probably by a majority vote with two year notice.

My money is on Idaho/NMSU
