Why don't we start a new thread for a new game?

RE: 2/4/2016 Northeastern game
Have to figure that Burchfield lights it up on Thursday based on the pattern he has gone. Weird point distribution the past 4 games.

Elon - 7 of 8 for 20 points
Hofstra - 0-1 for 0 points
Delaware - 6 for 8 for 18 points
JMU - 0-0 for 0 points

Since it appears he is scoring a lot every other game, the Northeastern game will be when he gets his points. Anyone know why such a difference in shots taken? He is a great shooter. He should take shots even if it means he misses some more.

RE: 2/4/2016 Northeastern game
From a distance, it appears to be playing time. Looks like he takes a while to get comfortable.

Elon - 16 minutes (20 points)
Hofstra - 11 minutes (0 points - thought he passed up a couple good looks here)
Delaware - 21 minutes (18 points)
JMU - 7 minutes (0 points)

Looks like he needs about 15 minutes of PT to get going. Also, more attention will be paid to him now.

Hofstra and JMU= combined 14-6 in CAA play
Elon and Delaware= combined 4-16 in CAA play

RE: 2/4/2016 Northeastern game
I get what both billymac and Rocco have said but 16 combined shots in 2 games (37 minutes total) versus only 1 shot in the other 2 games combined (18 minutes total) seems like a huge difference for a guy who is such a good shooter. I just hope he has that confidence that whether facing a good or bad team, he knows he can make the shots but he just needs to take some. Not looking for bad shots but just to get some because he is a guy who can really help the team.

RE: 2/4/2016 Northeastern game
It's a matter of defenses leaving him open. He rarely passes up an open shot, but knows not to take a bad shot if he's covered. Our offense works around the fact that we have four guys on the floor who you just can't leave open. Since he is not a starter and (usually) not the first guard off the bench, teams may decide to be lazy on defending him to help others. JMU guarded him pretty close. Another theory, until the Elon game he was a sharpshooter, but hadn't gone off for ridiculous amounts of points. After the Elon game Hofstra said we better guard this guy. Delaware sees the Elon game as maybe a one off thing and sag off. JMU sees that and guards him close. I'd bet in future games once he makes his first basket, teams will key in on that and he won't get a chance to take many more that game.

Good teams are less likely to leave him open and more likely to take advantage of him in defense. W&M got back into the game Sunday with their defense. Shaver has to pick his spots with Burchfield.

Even when he is tightly covered and scores little the fact that opponents have to pay close attention to him when he's on the court helps everyone else.

I just think he has to do with the defenses each team runs. Hofstra and JMU play much tighter coverage on defense because the guards have the athleticism to not get beat on the dribble every time. Delaware and Elon don't have that luxury and don't mark as tightly to not let other teams dribble right by them

His playing time probably is also predicated by how well he can play defense and we all know how much Tony values defense.

I agree with the quality of team/style of defense group. Connor doesn't create his own shot or shoot when he's covered, so good defensive teams cut down on his stat line. I agree with BG, though, that he turns the offense into 4-on-4 and can open up driving lanes or prevent help defenders by requiring a defender. Believe it that good teams know where he is when he's on the floor.

I don't think that's much of a factor with Connor. I think it's more that his minutes go up when he's scoring rather than his minutes dropping when he's not. The JMU & Hofstra games are baseline usage patterns for him rather than the Elon and Delaware games.
