And getting to Raleigh from Virginia by any route OTHER than taking I-95 and 40W is not recommended, lol. A friend of mine and I once drove from Charlottesville to Raleigh; a lot of country roads behind slow-moving vehicles (with zero ability to pass) was the result.
It's easy to take I95/I85 from Richmond. It's 2:20 to my door in Durham which is about 20 mins from PNC.

Greensboro Coliseum is near Elon, near W&M, and about 3 hours from UNCW. The ACC used to hold the tournament there, but with expansion is giving DC a shot. But, again, they didn't submit a bid. Not sure if UNCG could ever take it's location and the size of the school and become a basketball factor, but on paper they would make a great addition to the CAA.

Elon actually has a decent amount of alumni all throughout the Piedmont area near Greensboro.

IMO Greensboro isn't much better than Richmond. I've been to many concerts and games there it's kind of a craphole.

Charleston is fine. The opposing viewpoints are really just nitpicky. Baltimore, DC, Richmond....none of those are good options. There is not really an ideal location. But this is about as good as you can get. Plenty of direct flights from the northeast to get you there.
