CAA Notes ...of note. (1/25/16)
.

CAA STANDINGS: Hofstra, James Madison and UNCW went 2-0 last week and are tied for first place at 6-2, while Towson and William & Mary are just a game back at 5-3. The Big 12 is the only other Division I conference with five teams within a game of first place as of Jan. 25. Of the 20 CAA games over the past two weeks, eight have been decided by four points or less, including three overtime contests.

ON THE ROAD: Road teams have a 22-18 record thus far in CAA play. Eight of the league’s 10 teams have .500 or better road records in CAA play, including five squads that are 3-1 or better. All 10 teams have suffered at least one home loss in conference competition and only three have winning records. Visitors having success in CAA action continues a trend from last year when home teams finished 47-43.

ON THE ROAD, pt. 2: James Madison improved to 7-0 on the road after beating Elon, 82-64, last Saturday. The Dukes are one of four teams in Division I that haven’t lost on the road this season along with Southern Illinois (8-0), Saint Joseph’s (6-0) and Providence (5-0).

LATEST RPI: Four CAA teams are ranked among the top 100 in the latest RPI report released by Collegiate Basketball News (rpiratings.com). William & Mary still leads all CAA squads at #48, followed by Hofstra at #74, James Madison at #87 and College of Charleston at #99. The CAA continues to be ranked #9 among the nation’s 32 Division I conferences and is one of only nine conferences with four teams among the top 100 of the RPI

NATIONAL LEADERS:
The Tribe’s Terry Tarpey ranks 10th nationally in steals (2.5 spg) and Drexel freshman Terrell Allen (2.16 spg) is 24th.
Hofstra’s Juan’ya Green (7.0 apg) is 9th in assists.
Delaware’s Marvin King-Davis is 17th in double-doubles (10) and 37th in rebounding (9.4 rpg). Hofstra’s Rokas Gustys is 17th in double-doubles (10), 8th in FG percentage (64.1%) and 13th in rebounding (10.7 rpg).

W&M Notes:

David Cohn tied his career-high with 16 points at Hofstra. He’s averaging 12.0 ppg and 4.9 apg in CAA play.

Connor Burchfield hit 6-of-7 threes and scored a career-high 20 points in only 16 minutes against Elon.

Daniel Dixon returned to action from his ankle injury vs. Elon and had 18 points and 6 assists. He leads the Tribe with 50 treys and is shooting 41.0% from beyond the arc.

Sean Sheldon had 9 points and 9 boards vs. Elon. He’s shooting 72.1% from the field in CAA play.

Terry Tarpey had 15 points and 8 boards at Hofstra, which was his 6th straight game in double figures. He ranks 4th in the CAA in rebounding, 1st in steals and 3rd in blocks.

Omar Prewitt poured in 14 points at Hofstra and has scored double digits in 18 of his last 21 games.

Notes on this week’s Opponents:

The Tribe will take on the first place team and the last place team this week in CAA play. Sunday against JMU is a 7:00 PM start.

Delaware

The Blue Hens lost road games at UNCW (79-70) and CofC (59-58) last week.

6’2” So. Guard Kory Holden (16.9 ppg, 4.2 apg) averaged 19.0 ppg last week, including a team-high 22 points at UNCW, which was his 7th 20+ point effort. He has reached double figures in 14 of his last 15 games and ranks 3rd in the CAA in scoring and 4th in assists.

6’7” Sr. Forward Marvin King-Davis (14.8 ppg, 9.4 rpg) posted his CAA-best 10th double-double at CofC with team-highs of 17 points and 14 rebounds. He’s averaging 19.8 ppg and 11.2 rpg in his past 5 games.

6’4” Jr. Guard Cazmon Hayes (12.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg) has 21 steals on the season, to lead the Blue Hens.

6’1” So. Guard Anthony Mosley (8.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg) scored 11 points at UNCW and has 7 double-digit effort in the past 9 games. He’s averaging 12.5 ppg in CAA play.

6’6” Jr. Forward Devonne Pinkard (5.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg) averaged 8.5 ppg last week after scoring just three points in his previous four contests.

6’9” Jr. Forward Maurice Jeffers (5.9 ppg, 5.4 rpg) had 12 points at UNCW, which was his most since Dec. 3.

James Madison

Have won five straight after defeating Drexel (68-45) and Elon (82-64) last week. Improved to 7-0 on the road.

6’3” Sr. Guard Ron Curry (15.5 ppg, 3.9 apg) averaged 13.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg last week. He has scored double digits in a league-best 13 straight games.

6’10” Jr. Forward Dimitrije Cabarkapa (11.0, 3.9 rpg) scored a team-high 14 points vs. Drexel. He has made at least one 3-pointer in 27 of the last 29 games. He is their 6th man off the bench spark.

6’8” Jr. Forward Yohanny Dalembert (8.5 ppg, 6.7 rpg) had 8 points and 6 rebounds at Elon and is averaging 11.8 ppg and 7.5 rpg over the last 4 games.

6’6” Jr. Forward Shakir Brown (12.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg) added 12 points at Elon and is averaging 13.3 ppg over the past 4 games. He is one of 4 transfer students on the Dukes.

6’7” Jr. Guard Jackson Kent (7.6 ppg, 3.6 rpg) has made 27 three pointers on the season.

JMU limited Drexel to 31.3% FG shooting, including 3-of-18 from three. The Dukes lead the league in FG% defense and 3-point FG% defense in CAA games.

The Dukes are 13-0 when leading at the half.

Observations:
Big week for the Tribe, looking to bounce back after the drubbing at Hofstra. Delaware, still looking for that elusive first CAA win, has had problems finding scoring off their bench, but have some horses underneath and the always dangerous Holden out front.

JMU comes in on Sunday as the League's hottest team. Curry gives such solid leadership and Dalembert has begun to find his stride. That have a lot of weapons including the transfer Brown from downtown and Cabrakapa, who has been quite a surprise off the bench.

Tribe really needs to get it's mojo back on defense. After early success with steals and blocks, both totals have fallen off since the second half of the CofC game. Also 3pt defense has dropped off as well, with the all the opponents in the last four games having at least one half with 40-50% 3 point shooting.

Offense comes and goes, good defense is the common denominator for championship teams.

Till next week
