CAA Honors Flemmings For Big Week
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The Colonial Athletic Association has recognized UNCW's Chris Flemmings as the league's Co-Player-of-the-Week after the junior guard propelled the Seahawks to a pair of key wins and into a tie for first place in the circuit.
The 6-5, 175-pounder, who shared the honor with Hofstra's Rokas Gustys, averaged 23.5 points and 5.0 rebounds as the Seahawks raised their record to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the CAA. Flemmings shot 57.6 percent from the field, connecting on 19-of-33 field goal goals, and went 8-of-17 from long distance for 47.1 percent.
A graduate of Green Hope High School in Cary and redshirt transfer from Barton, the versatile Flemmings poured in a career-high 28 points in the hard-earned win over the Phoenix. He added 19 points and eight rebounds in a 97-94 overtime thriller on Saturday over the Tribe at Trask Coliseum.
"I'm really excited for Chris," said second-year Head Coach Kevin Keatts. "He's been our most consistent player thus far. He had a tremendous week for us in CAA play."
Flemmings, who ranks among the CAA's statistical leaders in several categories, leads the Seahawks in scoring (15.6 ppg), rebounds (5.6 rpg) and free throws (57), and is tied for the team high in steals (26).
Flemmings is UNCW's third CAA weekly honoree of the season. Freshman C.J. Bryce was singled out on Nov. 30, 2015, and Dec. 28, 2015, as the loop's Rookie-of-the-Week.
Gustys averaged 20.0 points and 15.0 rebounds while shooting 79 percent (15-of-19) from the floor in Hofstra's two games last week. The sophomore center set career-highs with 25 points and 20 rebounds in an overtime setback to JMU, becoming the first Hofstra player to post a 20-20 game since 1982. He also tallied 15 points and 10 boards in a victory over Drexel.
The Seahawks wrap up a brief two-game homestand on Thursday with a 7 p.m. clash against Delaware. UNCW just defeated the Blue Hens, 85-67, 11 days ago in Newark, Dela.
