As far as App's class goes, we badly need some depth on both sides of the line, but I like the class we've put together so far and we added two good ones yesterday.
Coaching and development are definintely key. Kevin Richardson, Armanti Edwards, Jason Hunter, Corey Lynch, and multitudes of other unranked players have made it to the NFL. App coaches em up and has a great walk on program as well.

2 things...
1. I KNOW! And it hurts my heart to admit that.
2. I think the 2/3 star folks aren't really being evaluated very strongly, so there's a HUGE margin of error in the class rankings once you get outside of the top say... 50 (maybe a smaller number).
So yes, recruiting rankings do matter, but at the level many are recruiting at in the Sun Belt, it's also a big time crap shoot.
A two star is just basically getting FBS offers. The three star area is the widest gap in talent. There are .80 three star and .89 that are likely highly nationally ranked at their position. With three stars you have pay attention to the actual grade, state, national and position ranking. High three star kids make up the majority of P5 rosters while low three stars probably are not getting serious looks from top level P5 schools and is not unlikely to land on a good FCS team. High level three star kids are looked at probably just as much as four and five. Low level three stars probably get atleast a review of highlights and offers.
The highest rated three star WR is 59th at WR and 340th in the country overall while GS three star wr recruit is ranked 123rd at WR and 829th in the country overall. A three star can mean a lot of things. Honestly the three star area should be broken up again.

I don't see much use of the 1 star, maybe make today's 2 stars, 1 stars, bottom half 3 stars, 2 stars and leave the 3 star designation to the top half 3 stars.

Yes. Thank you.
Jarvis Terrell is a kid who committed to an expired or non-existing offer, I think.
Jeremy Lewis decommitted when our RB coach followed our OC to Maryland (but will stil visit supposedly).
Shawn Thomas is no longer an A-State commit.

How is recruiting going?
We got two commits today, but neither is ranked yet.One is a big 6'5'' WR who has offers from Mercer, Alabama State, USA, and us. The other commit is a OL who has offers from Alabama State, Charleston Southern, and us. They were both recruited by our former NFL WR coach so I feel alright about them, I just don't feel great although I see potential in the 6'5" Duckworth.

what is the downside of the 6'5" kid? he not that quick or doesn't run routes well? gotta think with that kind of height, if he had speed he would be getting hounded for offers. Not saying he can't be great down the road, just curious what his deal is.

id be curious to know the average rating for GS APP for the previous 4 or 5 years and compare to the rest of the SB conference or G5 for that matter. Ratings are over rated.

I can't find any 40 times. But he gets the job done, he seems to get behind the D a lot. At times he looks like he hasn't grown into his body yet and looks clumsy. Routes don't look too good not too bad. and there are a couple of jump balls, but if you ask me, he doesn't completely play as big as he is. But at the H.S level, he most likely didn't need too. I just see a raw potential kind of guy. Bryson Duckworth from Drew High School.

I put much more in who else offered the kid than a rating. App's highest rated recruit is a 3 star OL who until December only had 1 additional FBS offer from GA St. He has picked up a few since, namely Syracuse and Louisville. However, our lowest rated OL commit has offers from Iowa State, Louisville, Indiana, USF, Tulane and Marshall. I take the evualations of college coaches over some internet site wanna be scout.

Agreed... especially the bloggers of each school writing puff pieces on each commit on how they are a "big get" or "tremendous talent". I get a kick out of reading the analysis of a highlight film... from guys that never played the game. Its typically loaded every football cliché you hear on ESPN.

Most of our WR/TE core has has GSU be their only offer and that includes Robert Davis and Penny Hart.

You are also trusting a 17 year old kid saying he has offers. Often the recruiting sites either don't verify or have no way of verifying other offers. A lot of kids get letters of interests from schools then tell recruiting sites they have offers. Recruiting is really a crazy thing when you think about all that goes on.

No doubt, nobody is every ranked a one star anyway. Something needs to be done with the three star rating for sure it is just to wide of a gap. .854 and below should be two star kids at this point. It would give a better indication of the talent you have and what type schools you are really competing with.

App is doing well, I'd like to see us add a couple more OL and one more DL to round out this class.

Not really. At our level many more factors play in like the frequency of coaching changes and there being little overall difference in talent between the low three stars we get vs two star kids. As you go down the rankings the talent level gets more and more equal. At the top you can see a clear difference in one and 10 whereas there is probably little eye test difference in 70 and 90. We find a lot more diamonds in the rough as well since we will take talent over size or size over talent much more often whereas the AL's of the world will not settle for either or. Then there are teams like GaSt that bring in a ton of transfers and JUCO's.
There is a reason the end of year rankings has a strong correlation to talent rankings like below. No it is not exact as these are human beings but all the individual team or player examples in the world can not refute the why teams higher in recruiting typically finish higher in the rankings and in their conferences. As far as the last few years for the SBC it has gone to script.

App average player rating (number of commits) per 247
2016 - 78.40 (19)
2015 - 78.09 (23)
2014 - 77.34 (28)
2013 - 75.14 (16)
2012 - 74.94 (8)
Notes - 2014 was first FBS class, only the top players in 2012 were rated so the average would have been lower as we brought in 14-17 players.
There is a definitely uptick in average rating, but the bigger difference is bringing in 30-40% more athletes of that caliber. This makes a huge difference as 10%-20% won't be around by there Jr year. When you have attrition like that at the FCS level it kills your overall talent pool to pull a two-deep from.

I don't get too terribly hung up on recruiting. Take a look at any school's signing classes over a 2-4 year period and you'll be suprised at how many kids are no longer with the schools they signed with. Many get buried in the depth chart and get disenchanted over playing time and transfer, some end up with nagging injuries that hinder them, others just quit, get homesick, etc. Take a look at your original signing classes were and count how many student athletes actually completed their full four years of eligibility.

Its a lot of fun speculating, but in reality, the best way to judge the success of a class, is to wait until their junior year.

Everyone knows that, because someone says it every single year.
I don't think CFB fans are very good at this "patience" thing you speak of....
