North Charleston CAAT
Since it has been the buzz in the last day, thoughts from this group? From the Drexel side of things, I think it makes zero difference. Those who are going to go, will go wherever it is held, those that dont will only go if it is convenient.

From the conference standpoint I think it is never a good idea to have it at one of the extremes geographically. It should always be as close to centric as possible to cater to everyone's fan bases. I still think the only reasonable places to have it are Richmond (Siegel Center?), Baltimore (Royal Farms Arena), DC (No good options there, Patriot Center maybe?), or even Norfolk (Scope). Again other than Siegel Center all are dated arenas and probably too big. I know many would hate it but I think with VCU long gone the Siegel Center would be a great arena to host (quality of the area notwithstanding)

RE: North Charleston CAAT
I'm fine with it as long as it's not there for 20 years in a row like it seemed to be in Richmond. It sucks that Drexel had some lousy teams in the 3 years that the CAAT was in Baltimore and we weren't able to take advantage of the relatively short drive to see them play in the Semi-Finals or Championship.

I'm still strongly believe that wherever they have it, the championship game should be played at the home court of the highest remaining seed several days after the semi-finals. You don't necessarily have the same fans showing up for the Q-Finals and the Finals, so it make 100000000% common sense to do it this way and reward the higher seed and their fans for a great regular season. But then again, the CAA and most of college basketball doesn't believe in common sense so bitching to 2 people on the internet isn't going to change anything.

Where in or near New York City? Maybe Nassau Coliseum if it renovates. The CAA won't attract enough fans to make sense to use Madison Square Garden or Barclays Center. I don't know what teams in the area have the largest arenas. If the CAA wanted to put its tournament in Carnesecca Arena (where St. John's plays), I wonder if St. John's would take the money or would be totally unwilling to help another conference out. I live in Nassau County near Hofstra, but I don't expect the CAA Tournament to come that far north unless the teams change again.

Agree. Anywhere north of Baltimore makes zero sense.

My logic is that we had the CAAT in Richmond, Baltimore and now Charleston It would only make sense that they plan on moving it north ( Maybe Atlantic City?).

Why? The north had their chance to show the conference we could get butts in the seats when it moved to Baltimore. It didnt happen. The fan bases from the northern schools are smaller and have shown they will not show up even if it is close by. Drexel, Towson, Delaware, Hofstra were all very close to Baltimore and showed poorly. The only northern team that was still decently far was Northeastern and their own fans would tell you they dont draw anyhow. We had our chance to shine the past 3 years and we flopped. We have no excuses to give to why the tournament should go north instead of south.

RE: North Charleston CAAT
Charleston is going to be a complete disaster. Outside of CoC, the closest schools, UNCW and Elon are still 3.5 to 4.5 hours away, which is about the distance from Drexel to Richmond.

The only reason why Richmond did so well is because of VCU fans and the fact that there were so many other schools within a few hours drive where people could take day trips to see their teams play. My estimate is that less than 200 people actually made the tournament a true destination trip. I'm rooting for Charleston to get knocked out early each year and for this to be a disaster so that the league can finally give up trying to make this a big time 4 day event.

RE: North Charleston CAAT
The problem JB is those fans of the other schools were present for all sessions, not just their own games. Sure you get the influx of fans that are only interested in their game, but the VA3 absolutely supported the entire event, not just their own games. While I agree that Charleston will be a disaster, I dont think it will be because of the lack of day trips available. You need butts in the seats and Charleston (drawing 3000 per game) and UNCW (drawing 4000 per game) are your 2 biggest draws right now. They want the tournament to be an event and people to stay all weekend. They wanted that in Richmond and Baltimore as well. I bet more people are willing to go to Charleston for a weekend win or lose than Baltimore or Richmond. I predict they will do just fine on attendance, which really means they will do just as good there as anywhere else. Fact is only North Charleston and Richmond bid on the tournament, so it is not like the options were rampant. Logistically I think Richmond makes the most sense, despite it being an awful place to play. Baltimore flopped. Charleston will do a bit better than Baltimore. Charleston cares a bit more about basketball than does Baltimore, even if not fans of the CAA or Charleston in particular. The problem is the conference has done nothing to build the brand of the CAA which is why very few places make sense for the tournament. To draw crowds there has to be appeal and a brand. We dont have that. Richmond was the closest to having that even after the VA3 left.
