RE: Northeastern Game
4 inches of snow possible in Boston today/tonight.

I take back my "dingy, cold" remarks...did not know it was refurbished and my one time there was in the 1990s. However, Tribe coaches will use the cold reference right through now....appears a year or two ago the arena heating system wasn't working properly and it was cold, very cold in the arena. And several players will tell you the floor is somewhat dead.

So what's the definition of a "dead" floor? I've played tons of hoops in my life and this is a new one.

Floor gives too much, ball doesn't bounce as high as usual. Happens sometimes when a floor is constructed on top of another surface with a gap in between.

RE: Northeastern Game
geewizNU is correct. They did a good job in the refurbishing project. They are never going to get rid of the "cavernous" feel inside (it's just too tall a ceiling), but it does look nice. From a broadcasting standpoint, I found it interesting that we were "up" on top of the first level of seats, not down courtside. It made for a good view of the game flow, if kept you from seeing the "little" things you notice from courtside. It also kept you from hearing referee explanations and made getting some things from the scorer's table a little slower.

Also, wanted to add, we had the same problem during the CAA Tourney back in the days of playing over the hockey rink, there would be a few dead spots on the floor. The players would eventually figure out where they were and avoid them.

Overall, the arena (as long as the heat is on... ) should not be the determining factor.

Consider yourself lucky if you've never experienced this. With a dead floor it may not be the entire floor, but there will be spots that are questionable. I played on one in high school where you would be dribbling along and all of a sudden the ball would only bounce up a few inches off the floor. Our PG figured it out and when the other team was coming down the floor their PG wandered towards the dead spot and with a well timed swipe he was off and running the other way.

When I was in high school we used to play a team whose court surface was carpet. That was fun

The old parquet flooring in Boston Garden in the 60s and 70s had dead spots where the joints connecting the squares started to wear out and become spongy. The Celtics knew where they were in intentionally tried to get opponents to dribble there knowing that the ball may not come all the way back up and gave them the ability to tie up their men.

It hasn't been that way since the arena was renovated in 2010, yet, the old wives tale about the rink and coldness et all still permeates on these boards.

Michigan State, JMU, Towson and Elin had no problems there.
Why will W&M?

Nice try. First, GeewizNU assures us nothing is wrong with the arena. Then, someone "accidentally" leaves the thermostat off over night. The next thing you know Cohen has the team coming out in ice skates and the rout is on for the Huskies

Don't know yet...

First, you can believe what you want ZN. Since W&M's struggles there is the team they played and not the arena.
Second, its David Cohn, not Cohen. So maybe you should know the players on your roster.
Nice try ...

Actually, it's Coen, as in Bill Coen, your coach...Any word on whether Quincy Ford will be back?

Boston Garden was notorious for dead spots. Supposedly some Celtic greats always new where the dead spots were and could take advantage of said knowledge.

We had at least one dead spot TO tonight when the ball didn't bounce up on a pass to Burchfield.

Is that what happened? I did not know who to be mad at, David or Connor - but, as I think about it, the ball did seem to behave in a strange way.

That's what I chalked it up to. It looked like the ball bounced about 6 inches lower than Connor expected it. The pass was well outside the three point line, so there wasn't a lot of action there to compare to that play.

You really should focus on other things. Its getting ridiculous.

Unless the pass wee to you how the hell would you know the ball hit a dead spot?

You won the game so rejoice and move on. Seriously.

Actually agree with this. We've one twice in Boston the last 2 years and the whole idea of dead spots/floors are overhyped, IMO. Other teams seem to fair ok as well.

Great road win against a quality, well coached team. Agree with others who have said they will be a very tough team come tournament time with a healthy Quincy Ford back.

But for now, I'll enjoy the season sweep. On to Gold Rush!

A few years back, we played at ODU. 1st half we were up 20, second half they came back and won. One end of the court had a basket that was not quite 10', and you could tell by the way that the players reacted to shots they expected to go in and the way they didn't know where rebounds were coming. It looked like a dead spot because the pass wasn't challenged or difficult, Connor just didn't get his hands on it. It's possible that it was a weird play, but it's more likely that the ball didn't bounce right.

Great win! Can't wait for Tribe Athletics to post the highlights so I can check them out. I keep missing these Thursday games due to inopportune flight times for work. Seeing the stats and responses on here, looks like we had a nice second half and got some great production from Omar and Daniel.

Not as much fun as our own production, but highlights through Northeastern and the CAA are up on YouTube.
