OK so we can continue to have fun speculating let's be clear that no one has been promised JL's job.

Why because there is no one who can do that (including the AD). This is a state job with the final decision being made by the W&M BOV. You have to follow the process.

There will be a real search (probably by a very small group led by the AD) & the best candidate will be recommended to the BOV 01-ncaabbs

And my prediction is that it will be a fun decision because there will be a substantial group of very qualified people who will compete for the position (BTW JL could be around for a number of years :>)

Perhaps we should speculate on how many years he will be around.

What's the over/under? I'll set it at 3.5 years. Go!

This is harsh. Somebody is not happy with the Withers hire.

Well, they definitely accept their status...every other Texas University's "drunken cousin".

So, they've got THAT going for them...

Matt Kelchner the former a Tribe assistant and O coordinator who is the head coach at Christopher Newport U , was by many here in town was thought to be JL heir apparent . Matt has a great personality and was popular with the well heeded alumns and the beer swilling riff-raff fans. He started the CNU program and has had great success without too many losing seasons. It could be with the years passing he may be in the situation of being too old now and may not want to leave a very comfy job he currently has.

Matt Kelchner (born March 5, 1959) is the head coach of the Christopher Newport University Captains college football team in Newport News, Virginia, and previously served as an assistant coach at The College of William & Mary between 1984 and 2000. Kelchner was hired as Christopher Newport's first head coach on May 9, 2000.[1]

Over ten seasons at Christopher Newport, Kelchner has compiled an overall record of 68 wins to only 37 losses, guided his team to the Division III playoffs in six seasons and been named USA South Coach of the Year in 2001, 2002 & 2006.

How about Russ Huesman?

May also be a little on the old side (depending on when JL retires :>)

Russ is at his Alma Mater. Don't see it happening.

I thought of Kelchner too and agree on all points. Hope he would consider it but may be past that point now.

I'd consider Elijah Brooks at DeMatha, as well as David. Of course, if Sean or Mike or Coach Shoop want to return .... :-)

Did we also mention Alan Williams (currently at the Lions).

Jake Phillips is building up a solid resume as a high school coach with those attributes. He would need some assistant/recruiting experience to make that transition, imo.

I have to believe Kevin Rogers will take over when JL retires, if only for a few years. We do not know what motivated Rogers to come back to W&M, but I'm pretty sure it was not for the money. I understand that he could not have been "guaranteed" the Head Coach job when JL retires, given the hiring process at a place like W&M, but he could have been guaranteed the support of key people for the job when the time came. The transition from JL to KR would be be a very easy change to make a couple years from now and it would be very OK with me if KR only remained as HC for a few years. What would be wrong with that??

There's nothing wrong with that. Bringing in a young OC to replace Rogers (maybe twice) would work.

I don't know what Rogers motivation in coming back was either, but if it was to shed stress as he ages, that may not work for him.

While at VT Kevin expressed to someone I know how much he and his wife loved Williamsburg and they wanted to move here at some point. With his background he has accomplished a great deal and accepting the job here gave him a chance to move here, work a few more years at his Alma Mater and then retired. Just my take

Apparently, Talley will be retiring from Villanova next year. Long-time assistant Mark Ferrante (been with Nova for 29 years and 17 as Assistant Coach) is expected to be named head-coach-in-waiting and will take over for the 2017 season.

Talley's a great coach. I'll be happy to see a different coach on the Villanova sidelines.

Neither Solderitch nor Rogers has ever been a head coach. Not sure we would go there unless Laycock already has it planned out.

I could see a scenario where Laycock stays on for another ten years and then a huge exodus occurs. Solderitch has been a state employee since getting out of college. Nothing for nothing, but he'll have a good pension. Rogers will be done by then too

The last "successful High School coach" hired to be Head Football Coach at W&M was Milt Drewer, and I don't think that worked out so well.

I always find it fascinating how many of our threads have a title and by the time you read through it, it has (almost) nothing to do with the original subject of the thread.

But I can be just as guilty as anyone else! :)
