LOL what a dick.

This. I know that is the nature of the business but he was just in the living rooms of these 17 and 18 years old kids promising their parents that he would take care of them for next 4 to 5 years. That is pretty low.

That's just the way it is. Get yours while you can because they will fire you just as quick.

We had better not take 4 weeks to hire another coach. Signing day, winter workouts, spring ball....

This is just about the worst possible timing. A big FU to JMU from Withers, imo.

Have you lost your mind? He has never won with his own players. For that matter, neither has EW.

With all due respect, he won more in 2 years at UR than EW won at JMU.

And was hired by a school with a tad better profile than Texas State.

55, and has recruited the state almost his entire career. Provably some of the guys in this recruiting class. No brainer hire. He's not likely to get another FBS gig.

The timing of this move, especially after being courted by East Carolina, to move on to a job like Texas State for whatever they're paying him is abysmal. My reaction to this was anger towards Withers....shows he's all about himself and never had an investment in JMU as a school or Harrisonburg as a community. If you have any integrity as a person, you don't leave now for that job.

And this!! Good riddance!

He was offered over 700,000. The number you saw on twitter is what we paid Fran.

650-700K, thanks for verifying.
No idea what we'll be giving Withers, though.
A P5 guy wasn't going to take 700K at a G5 when he can get 1.2 million at another P5.

We've been FBS 3 whole seasons. Thanks for the bottom feeder moniker. As full FBS we've had 1 none .500 season. Regardless, we're still FBS. Hopefully Withers pulls us out of the 1980's offense doldrums.

We just had the two worst consecutive seasons of defensive football in our program's history. I wish you all luck, but I just have to be honest.
The guy just went 1-5 against quality Fcs opponents in the last two years.

LOL, jobs can be turned down when you have a current contract. This is why I hate the way college coaches can just up and leave. He interviewed for damn near 4-5 jobs this off-season.

No schtick here. I wouldn't mind taking a shot on Shane Beamer. He knows this state very well for recruiting too.

Agree. Is anyone really surprised? Its a sh!t move, no doubt. But he wasn't here for the long term. With VL2 no longer around his marketability would have been way down next year when he would be fully exposed. Texas State better have some game changing studs or EW weaknesses will be exposed in short order. **** him.

Shane Beamer accepted a position at Georgia under Kirby Smart. He is not coming to JMU.

Serious query here: What can we really expect from a HC in regard to pedigree? We can talk all day long about bfs, fans, and a huge athletic budget, but in the end we are not going anywhere. Every coach knows it. We will not pay COA, and many of our peers have passed us by. I say cut a ton of expenses and join the ODAC or some other D3 conference. We feel great about ourselves, but I don't think we should.

Don't blame Withers at all. I wish the timing were a little better but that's out of his control. I would be stunned if his move to an entry level G5 school is for any reason other than he doesn't feel we'll be moving up. He was sold an empty promise and snagged a lifeboat as soon as he realized that.

Somebody at tx state did not do their homework .
If this were basketball we would be saying he could not beat a team with an rpi better than 150 .

As was mentioned previously, Withers was interviewing for jobs such as CMU ect LAST YEAR! He couldn't wait to get out once it was obvious FBS wasn't likely. Sucks but it is the way the circle of life works.

If you wanted to pay him like a G5 coach I'm sure he would have considered staying. Instead he'll be recruiting some dudes to Texas St.
