Men's Hoops program headed up despite a few hickups
Overall I'm happy with the direction of the program. Yes, that's an understatement. but it's going forward at a nice clip. Keatts is adding pieces that will help the program and is also holding guys responsible for doing what they have to do on and off the court. If you play well, you get your chance. As a player you can't ask for more. Off the court there hasn't been any issues, which is great. That starts with getting guys that are serious about playing the game.

On the court, the Hawks started well and hit a lull. With all of the new guys trying to find their niece, I can see that. It reared it's head at ECU when the Hawks had 20 more shots and still lost. That hangover affected the away game at Radford too. Until roles are established and they shouldn't be with 8 new guys, that going to happen.

As far as the 3 ball goes....that is a function of guys that aren't mentally committed to shooting the ball while not quite feeling comfortable in their role-many of us have played on new teams before so you can understand that dynamic. And it's also function of not getting inside out looks or good drive and kicks. If a guy feels good about himself in his role and it's a good look, yes, that ball has a great chance. That's starting to work itself out provided that guys are shooting good 3's-not just a quick look before investigating other chances-talking exclusively half court sets. You teach individual skills (and I do as a coach) and that's good, but being able to play in a collective manner is vital.

Overall, the program is progressing. Ponder, who plays with confidence which I really like, and Sherwood leave after this year, but the very talented Jaylen Fornes comes in and the big kid from the Jacksonville area that can run and shoot plus the 3 star PG will be available. That's the way that you want it to go-a continual pipeline of very good, committed players. The team is looking like a possible NIT team right now when it all plays out unless they win the CAA tourney (RPI at end less than say 85) which is not that bad either, provided that they continue to gel-that may not happen either, but they will win overall for sure. Slow progress is great because we want Keatts around as long as possible. Keatts is building a program so the longer he's here, the better. Go Hawks!!

I'm with you the direction of the program is certainly good. That said all I saw was excuses for the "lull". We got beat at Ecu because Keatts didn't adjust and got beat at Radford because they were not ready to play.

Exactly fellas. We are definitely on the up and up. However, we will take some bumps and bruises along the way. By year three and four under Keatts we may end up being a CAA monster. Gotta wait and see, but it's a great feeling to have rising expectations year after year.
