RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting
97,
I was telling my buddies the same thing last week. Next year's team has a lot of unknowns but I expect the league to take a step back next year. With our infusion of athletes on the roster we can surprise the conference next season. I see CoC as a lock to be in the CAA Tournament championship game next season but after that it's anyone's guess who will be challenging the Cougars.

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting
Jack Whitman is the guy that transferred to Kansas from W&M. Believe that Brady recruited him to JMU.
With respect to next season's CAA, my impressions were the same regarding the class of the league; i.e., CofC. I wouldn't sleep on NE, Hofstra and Towson, though. I also think that Drexel and DE have good coaches at the helm and UNCW is largely an unknown with the coaching change (he came from a good program, of course). NE has brought in some good players the last couple of seasons and had TJ Williams emerge out of the blue last year to the player of the year. Hofstra has some quality players still and Skerry has a way of bringing talent onto his roster. Because it's a mid-major league, it's also tough to know who might emerge going forward. It's a transition year in any event for the league and JMU should be one of the most talented rosters in the league and should be one of the haves going forward for at least the next two seasons. If not, we've misjudged the talent infusion onto the roster.
With regard to Cooke, I read an article yesterday in which it said he has a decent to good chance of making that team (Timberwolves) given its dearth of guards. The article said his stock fell because of his performance in the NCAA tournament. I did not realize he fared poorly in the Portsmouth Invitational. Very tough to make an NBA roster, of course.

A good way out, but JMU offered PG Quadir Pettaway of Hampton Roads Academy today. He is a rising high school freshman. His coach simply said when I asked about him, "he's real good." He's not sure we really have a shot b/c who knows how he will develop and who else will come calling.

Jmu offered several recruits yesterday class of 18,19,20 and 21. They are in the middle of the elite camp that they hosting. I also noticed that about a week ago they hosted several Team Loaded AAU players for an unofficial visit- so there may be more offers on the way.

One of best decisions Coach Rowe has made has been to once again offer summer camps at JMU. It serves 2 very important purposes:
1 - Community investment and involvement.
2 - Get HS kids on your campus.

Offering an eight grader a college basketball scholarship is a bit ridiculous. Not real sure what the intent is this far in advance

You are correct and some of us protested the Brady decision to terminate the JMU basketball camp.
It is very revealing to see old posts from people defending Brady for not holding a camp (JMU Nation, HMK, Duke84) - they said he was too busy recruiting and camps did not make sense anymore? Do they have integrity?

RE: 2017 Hoops Recruiting
A couple of former PG targets doing well early on. Not sure if JMU was not selected here because the playing time wouldn't have been as great early on or for other reasons. In the case of Wheeler we know that JMU went balls out to get him the others I'm not sure if they backed off of at some point or not.
Justin Forrest- App State (Father played at G Tech)- just scored 25 off the bench last night in a loss to Iowa State. Averaging 17 per game as a Freshman
Donald Carey- Mount St Mary's- starting as a Freshman. Averaging 11 points and 4 assists per game (went for 14 and 6 in a loss to G Town).
Jamari Wheeler- Penn State- in the rotation and getting minutes. Not much of a scorer more of an assist and steal guy.
Some others:
Kaiden Rice- Citadel- they have only played 1 game so far and he played 4 minutes
TJ Massenburg- Middle Tennessee- limited minutes thus far for the freshman big man
Will Nunez Juco SF- not getting any run early on for Florida International
Yet more connected to JMU:
Jordan Shepherd- former Brady recruit now a Sophomore at Oklahoma- Rotation guy averaging 7 points and 5 assists per game off the bench
Justin Kier- Spotswood kid who apparently had interest in playing for JMU but I don't think Brady ever offered- Starting for George Mason and averaging 15 points per game as a Sophomore

It's interesting to me what happens to these kids- sure there are kids that transfer up but many times the only opportunity is to transfer down.
Sterling was pretty good at Juco/has good size/has become a good shooter but he ends up at Alcorn State. There was a player a few years prior who red shirted then went Juco and ended up a similar place, Kenyan Pittman.
In Hall's case I guess he took off a few years and is now a Sophomore for D2 or NAIA at Shaw? He was a good player as a Freshman with a lot of potential.
A recruiting target from a few years ago- PG out of NC Dondre Griffin. JMU was a finalist prior to getting the commitment from Jordan Shepherd. Griffin was rated higher than Shepherd. He goes to Murray State doesn't play much last year- leaves for Juco and just committed to Hampton for next year as a Junior. In a matter of a few years he went from a highly recruited mid major PG who committed to a solid Mid Major to Juco now to Meac/Big South.
With each transfer it's like these kids go a rung down on the conference/hoops ladder.
