Contrary to his nickname, I always thought that Rusthoven was a natural 4 who played at 5 because we didn't get the minutes out of Heldrig we hoped for.
My guess is that he is more in the 4 that plays the 5 mold since he is 6'8-6'9. What will make him effective at the 5 will be his 7'0 wingspan. I was surprised about his listed weight in the tribe athletics release. Very encouraging if he can maintain the size and still move/jump well. A solid base that can't get pushed around combined with the length to attack the rim or alter shots will go a long way in the CAA.
In highlights he does seem comfortable inside as well as away from the hoop, though I haven't seen enough to indicate a variety of post moves. He does seem aggressive and finishes well at the rim. Also, very importantly, he shoots free throws well. That seems a lost art for the tribe, especially the bigs.

Add Ted O'Gorman to the Bill Phillips group. He was a starting center under Bruce Parkhill who transferred (to Iona I think).

I don't think it will matter because I doubt Tony moves away from playing one big man

I agree with this. I don't think Schlottman has scored a basket all year, whereas Tot is an aggressive, and pretty good shooter. When healthy, he is also a good defender. Also, the UVA 7 footer was giving us fits. Seacat is our biggest player and, I think, not as timid as Whitman under the glass.
I also think we'll see more Tot and less Schlotman as the season progresses. [Assuming Oliver gets/stays healthy]
I would love to see Tot either start or get some serious minutes in a game early this year, just to see what he can do when comfortable in there. He shows flashes of being very very good.

With Tot"s size, I do not see any reason why he cannot also be on the floor at the same time that we have Cohn in, maybe as an alternative to Burchfield when Daniel gets a rest, or as an additional alternative to Malinowski when Terry or Omar get a rest. He is certainly tall enough and athletic enough to play the wing, can take guys off the dribble, and has a nice perimeter stroke.

You nailed it 75. Long and short of it is OT is simply too good not to be on the floor. He's a freak at the point and can fit into the 3/4. Some of these other guys are like schoolboys compared to him. Can't provide names as that would be unwarranted. It's simply unimaginable that a player like OT can't see 22 to 30 minutes a game.

RE: UVA Game 8
We'll see more of him going forward. Tony was clear in the post game at UVa that it's been hard for Tot as he was injured and then we had a string of games with very little practice time for him to get into the swing of things. After exams we have a much more spaced out schedule until conference play starts. Likely see Tot work in more in those games.

I think the term 'bust' is unwarranted. I prefer " it just didn't work out". That covers a myriad of reasons, including a recruiting mistake at the beginning.

RE: UVA Game 8
Rowley is just a redshirt freshman with three more seasons left. Tony and coaches like him alot, but where would you substitute him right now and who wouldn't you play if he did? We are very deep and he needs to put on more bulk and muscle right now, but he is a terrific shot at 6'8" and coaches believe he'll be a player
the next three seasons.
Tony said at his luncheon today at Anna's that Tot is finally rounding into shape after his badly sprained ankle and indicated we'll be seeing lots more of him.

We're talking about a player who is a redshirt freshman that plays the deepest position on the team. If we didn't have Malinowski, he'd be in the rotation, and probably would have games where people rave about his play "for a freshman". We've got a glut of talent in front of him and if Rowley's not playing by this time in his junior year, we can start talking about "bust". He would have to be as good as Daniel was as a freshman to crack a deep rotation. Coach Shaver's style is an 8 man rotation, and we have two centers, three forwards, and 4 guards. That's 9 players without including the time that Seacat gets at the expense of Whitman (currently) or Tot fighting his way into the rotation. Adding those two puts us at 11 players trying to get time. If Rowley doesn't break into the rotation this year it may have nothing to do with him at all, aside from him not being a star from the start on the level of Tarpey, Dixon, or Prewitt.

UVA beat #14 West Virginia at the Garden tonight 70-54.
No shame in our loss

And that was on a neutral court...not a true road game like we undertook.
