RE: Playoff Game 2 - @Richmond
Laycock has been at W&M over 30 years. They have a facility named after him. Like him or not, he ain't going anywhere until he wants to. And, I'm sure that when he is ready to retire, he will have major sway on his successor. Looking at his coaching tree, that is a good thing.
Listen, I know football season didn't end the way that we wanted. However, the AD didn't fire Shaver after sub .500 seasons, they sure as hell aren't moving on from Laycock after 9 wins, the co-CAA championship, & a postseason win. That is a fantastic season any year. Give it a couple of days. Let the disappointment subside and I think you will agree.

RE: Playoff Game 2 - @Richmond
Mrjoolius is exactly right.
We were a tired and beat-up team the final three games of the season, especially the defense, but I'll take nine wins, including an undefeated six at home, and a CAA co-championship any time.
Mr real gripe is that we've lost five games in a row to Richmond, which has had our number over the past four seasons. Laycock doesn't talk about that, but, knowing Jimmye, it's driving him crazy. We once beat UR fifteen straight years (1939-1954) so let's hope that's not happening to us now.
If I were to list what we need for next season to get to a higher level in the playoffs it would be:
*A couple of 6-2, 210 pound defensive backs with speed...our small guys try hard but they're getting killed
by bigger receivers.
*A dominant pass rusher or two. We put no pressure on qbs and rarely wrap them up even if we do get in there.
*A total revisit of our defensive schemes...in too many games we look tentative and non-aggressive on defense. Our linebackers are always dropping back (or so it seems), and our defensive backs play way, way too soft for examples. We need to play defense with a chip on our collective shoulders.

+1
I know we all mock the preseason rankings, but we had a great season compared to where we were supposed to finish.

You might as well ask for a new head coach. There's no team in the country not looking for the same thing.

That was maybe the most artificial environment I've ever seen. The UR fanbase doesn't deserve that team. Aside from the we are UR chant (didn't start until they were up 30) there was no time when the crowd was given an opportunity to provide atmosphere. Every play was followed by a pop song. I have to assume that recruits are shown the stadium during the week.

Indeed. Sad part is the 2013 defense (with many of the same players) had a pass rush, and was an attacking type defense. If the offense in those years had a pulse, we would have been a handful for most teams.
The defense needs a refresh, but it is a challenge for us to find/recruit the players with the physical measurements noted. On that subject, though it does not get too much play, since Rocco's time at UR (like his time at LU) he has brought in quite a few transfers. I have heard that he has more UVA transfers in line for next year.

I wasn't at the first matchup, but during the playoffs they are restricted from playing any pump up things or whatever. Was the at Zable last week...every play was followed by a pop song.

RE: Playoff Game 2 - @Richmond
In regards to home field. It is my understanding that last week's games were at large bids with no home field advantage earned other than where it's played, so the NCAA creates a neutral atmosphere. The second round of seeded team earned a home field advantage so that atmosphere can reflect that. Don't understand it more than that. Seems like a stupid rule to begin with.

Cluley's Instagram post made its rounds on the Richmond team. Several defensive players saw that as a personal affront. It was not a good idea.

The post was not the reason for yesterday's results.
Is there anything else we can dump on this kid? I like the post, I like the kid, I like the way he plays.
With an emotional loss like yesterday it's easy to point the finger. Richmond rushed 3, dropped 8 and still got pressure on him. We were down 2 reveivers, one starting lineman (probably our best).
It looked in the beginning we wanted to go double TE, run some power at them, then we lose one of our TEs.
There was a lot that went wrong yesterday, with plenty of blame to assign.
Thankfully the players on this team don't focus on the blame and instead they focus on the good that came out of a 13 game season. Things that they can build on.
The current 2019 class has some studs, the 2018 class is already producing, 2020 is looking good. Our upper classmen will lead an even better 2016 campaign.

Ohhhhh THAT'S why we lost. I thought it was because we were thoroughly outschemed and outplayed. But it looks like we can chalk this one up to social media.

First we need a new DC with an aggressive scheme

On to basketball season. 9-4 with a second round playoff loss would have been a season most of us would have taken back in Augsut given the 2nd previous close misses. Also, if we had lost yesterday to NDST 48-13, I suspect it would bother many of us less. The fact that Richmond continues to dominate us and caused our exit is the salt in the wound. They have basically dominated us for 10+ years with the exception of 2010. There will be changes for next year and probably some improvements, especially defensively. I prefer to look at this season as a success overall with a return to the playoffs and perhaps a stepping stone to something bigger in 2016.
Next year, our schedule is tougher so we will have to be better on both sides of the ball.
