With as many players as we lost to the MLB draft, I would not have been particularly surprised to have seen Charleston picked first, particularly with their pitching staff.

But our team is simply loaded with talent every year lately. We don't rebuild, we reload under Scalf/Hood.

I'm worried about our pitching too. We lost a ton to the ML Draft.

Ditto.

Pitching has been my major concern. The coaching staff seems confident that they will perform well.

Gesell Named To NCBWA Preseason Stopper List

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW senior righthander Jared Gesell has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's preseason Stopper-of-the-Year Award list.

As a junior, Gesell helped bolster a bullpen that combined for 28 wins and posted 15 saves, most by the pitching staff since the 2009 season. Gesell finished the season with a 2-1 record in a career-high 23 appearances while notching five saves, also a career-best. In 31.2 innings, he compiled a 2.27 earned run average while limiting opponents to a .180 batting average.

Gesell takes over as the team's closer in this season after Jordan Ramsey was drafted in the seventh round by the Cincinnati Reds following an All-America season. Gesell finished the 2015 season strong, picking up the save in the championship game of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament and later holding LSU to one hit in two innings of scoreless relief in the Baton Rouge Championship game.

In January, the Seahawks were picked by the CAA coaches to win the conference title for a second straight season and Gesell was named to the preseason All-CAA team.

The Seahawks open their season on Friday against Western Carolina in the Buffalo Wild Wings Battle at the Beach. First-pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Brooks Field.

Gesell was in no way overused last year. So he should be in dominating form.

There are still tail gate spots left. Where are these new tail-gaters I've been hearing about? Time to step up your game.

RE: UNCW Baseball
There are 16 pitchers on the roster. This includes 8 sophmores, two being transfers. One of those two, Burke, was 7-1 and a 2.44 era at Wake Tech. The most of the remaining 14 returners have already been thrown in the fire. Crump finished last year with a 2.49 era and a start against LSU (2 scoreless inn.) In the regionals. Barnes went 5-0 with a 3.40 era and 4 scoreless inn. against LSU. And let's not forget our bulldog, Magestro.
Foster (senior) was 7-1, with a complete game (6 SO's) against Tulane. Then, we have a promising group (3) of freshmen, including Mulier who had a 2.40 era with 112 K's in 70 innings. And we have a junior transfer, Geoff, from Lenoir CC that was 3-1 with 3 saves and a 0.86 era last season.
That leaves 11 others in the pot to step up and fill any holes that are left. Including seasoned sophmores Easter, Roberson, Lockamon and 6-6 transfer Gunner Deal.
I think our coaching staff is very pleased with what we have.

Folks that haven't taken advantage of tailgating before baseball games are missing out. Mingling w/other Hawk fans pre-game is a lot of fun. Reserve a spot and join the fun. 33, tke75hawk & myself have a great time.

2016 CAA Preview

Nice. Looking forward to seeing freshman catcher Ryan Jeffers perform out there. Baseball America tabs him as the top pick for Rookie of the Year. All the other major awards appear to be going to Charleston, haha.

Also thought this was pretty sweet. 4/10 of the top draft prospects are Seahawks per BA:

TOP 10 PROSPECTS FOR 2016 DRAFT

1. Bradley Jones, of/1b, College of Charleston
2. Nick Zammarelli, 3b, Elon
3. Bailey Ober, rhp, College of Charleston
4. Gavin Stupienski, c, UNC Wilmington
5. Steven Linkous, of, UNC Wilmington
6. Jered Gessell, rhp, UNC Wilmington
7. Casey Golden, of, UNC Wilmington
8. Aaron Civale, rhp, Northeastern
9. Chad Carroll, ss, James Madison
10. Dustin Hunt, rhp, Northeastern
