W&M to control NFL coaching in PA soon?
Kelly was fired from the Eagles

McDermott should be a strong candidate for the head coaching position. If he gets it, W&M alums will be coaching at both NFL teams in Pennsylvania.

I hope not...I want the Eagles to continue to suck. McDermott deserves better.

McDermott has got to be their #1 target. Two proven defenses over his career. Fired in Philly at the end of Andy Reid era to save Reid's head for one more season. Very familiar with him overall.

Question is: Does McDermott want to go back to Philly? He's from the midwest, so maybe he will wait until a job opens out there.

That is not an NFL job I would want. McDermott has a great set-up in Carolina, so I would think he will wait for the right opportunity.

Sean is from Lansdale, PA. I know he may have been born in the midwest but his roots are in Philly area.

Philly is one of the toughest sports towns to coach...lots of critics and boo birds. This is the city that once booed Santa Claus at a season ending Eagle game!

However, Sean--a Pa native--would have a chance to become a sports icon in Philadelphia if he accepted the Eagles job, if offered.

You don't turn down NFL head coaching job offers.

With apologies to W. C. Fields, The first prize in the Eagles quest for a head coach is a 3 year contract. Second prize is a 6 year contract...

RE: W&M to control NFL coaching in PA soon?
It's really amazing to think of some of the people who were with the football program in the 1990's who are (or have been) connected to the NFL. McDermott, Tomlin, Dan Quinn, Alan Williams, Mike Leach, Jude Waddy, and probably a host of others who I am missing. When I tell folks that I knew (or still know) some of these people personally, part of me is embarrassed as I feel I am a "name dropper" which is not intended. It is just truly amazing that that much talent came into our program, was cultivated, and is as successful as it has been.

No offense to any other decade, but the 1990's had quite an impressive group of student-athletes and coaches.

RE: W&M to control NFL coaching in PA soon?
Per a "Get to know Sean McDermott" article we wrote on the Blog last Summer:

"McDermott attended La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. In high school, he starred as a defensive back, and was named all-league in 1992. McDermott was also a wrestler, and gained national honors for wrestling in both 1992 and 1993.

1999-2010: McDermott would quickly transfer over to the NFL, catching on as a Scouting Administrative Coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999. But less than two years later, he found himself as the Assistant to the Head Coach (Andy Reid), and then as a Defensive Assistant for the Eagles.

In all, McDermott totaled 12 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles– the last two as Defensive Coordinator. Throughout his time, he contributed to six division titles, five NFC Championship game appearances, and a trip to Super Bowl XXXIX."

In sum, he not only is from PA, but his first coaching stint in the NFL was with the Eagles. I think this is a no brainer.

If you want to check out our full article on Sean McDermott (going through his playing and coaching career), the below article is a really good read--we may need to re-work it and re-post once he gets hired! We're psyched for Sean, and hope teams hold out on hiring coaches until AFTER the playoffs. Last season the Panthers were in the playoffs for what seemed like forever, and all the coaching vacancies were more or less filled when they got out!

My experience tells me that logical moves in professional sports rarely happen.
