Walk On FB Players
Watching this season progress am noticing a number of walk on football players getting a good amount of playing time. Some even in a starting role. Dulaney, a redshirt freshman has started a couple of games. I understand that is due to injury, but he was also defensive scout team player of the year last year. He's performing real well too. Kuzjak, a sophomore has started I think 2 games game at WR, 2nd in his position for receptions so far. Armstrong, a red shirt freshman hasn't started, but is 3rd at his position in receptions and made some key plays this year. Two of the 5 WR's in the rotation are walkons. There may be more walkons at other positions, these stood out so far.

I would think that these guys should eventually get some help financially to keep them at WM. Looks like two are in state one is out of state. How often do walkons earn scholarships at WM, or do they eventually transfer out?

HEYFARL (Hundred Each Year for a Rising Letterman) has been scoring big for the Tribe Football Program, one small gift at a time.

Thanks for the info. So I guess WM has a separate fund for just walk on awarded scholarships? You would think that they had an opportunity at one of the 63 available too.

Just curious. The three that I mentioned seem like keepers and would hate to lose them.

Walk On FB Players
I believe they do have a chance to earn one as scholarship players will sometimes leave the program. We have a long history of walk ons playing well and then earning a scholarship.

Again, thank you. It seems easier to follow in FBS, but it seems that FCS has to really get creative to attract and keep quality players.

there have definitely been a number of walk-ons that have earned scholarships over the last 10+ years (since I started following the team).

W&M raises money for the walk-ons through that program, but scholarships from that obviously count against the 63 that the program is allowed to give out.

W&M has to raise the money for all 63 scholarships, so that is one campaign to fund some of them.

I don't think there have been many junior/senior players getting big minutes that were still not receiving any scholarship money (aka, my impression is they take care of the kids that are making big contributions).

I'm sure 4SF will provide more info when he sees this thread...

RE: Walk On FB Players
Former walk-ons who are likely now on scholarship include Jerry Ugokwe, Eric Hensley, Andrew Weidinger, Nick Dorka, Daniel Kuzjak, Peyton Gryder, Ian Haislip, Matt Ahola, Steven Lubnow, and Mike Barta. HEYFARL is currently funding four scholarships each year. Redshirt freshmen probably in line include Jack Armstrong and Josh Dulaney.

Our walk-on history is exceptional. All-time greats who came as walk-ons include Lang Campbell and Adrian Tracy.

That's a great track record and a wonderful program. To be able to attend W&M, play football in a top FCS program, then to know if you work hard, perform on the field and in the classroom it could eventually lead to helping their family pay for school. Very nice.

There are some very good ball players you listed. Cudos to W&M and the alumni for supporting this program.

RE: Walk On FB Players
Lang turned down a full ride from JMU for an opportunity to walk on at W&M. Thank God.

It was actually Richmond he turned down. Great story of character in that Jim Reid, then the HC at UR, advised Lang that if he wanted to be a pro-style QB, he might be better off walking on at W&M where Reid believed he would earn a scholarship. Reid is indeed a man of character. Truly interested in the well being of student-athletes.

Aww c'mon, you know darn well it was Micky Matthews who offered Lang that advice, paving the way for a rival to gain a superstar! No coach, no coach I say, cared more for the well being of student-athletes than Matthews...a man of character indeed.

Agreed. When I think of character, I think of MM and Justin Thorpe.
